7700k running too hot!

Hi guys, so I just unpacked my i7-7700k and the temps have been all over the place. I have a corsair H55 Cpu cooler which is quite a bit old, but on that a little bit later.

The temps have been 42-43 degrees idle (ambient temperature 34 degrees), and under load of GTA V, without a GPU upto 80 degrees.
I ran Prime95, and it reached 100 degrees (Ambient temperature 34 degrees), which is where I stopped the test.

More info, when the ambient temperature was 25 degrees, the cpu was idling at 31-33 but under load of prime95 reached close to 97 degrees.

The H55 cooler has become dark brown or something after use with my previous CPU, i kept it away thinking it might be broken, but because I didn't have an option right now, I started it up again.

My views are that I just need a better cpu cooler, this CPU generally tends to run hot! But I'd like your views on this as well!

Any help regarding the situation would be immensely appreciated.

P.S. No Overclocking done. Basic stock CPU! Voltage at 1.248 out of the box

I can't tell if your cooler is bad or not, but being discolored is not a great sign.

However, you do need to realize that both Intel and AMD's latest chips run hotter than previous chips ran. This is worrisome to some people before they learn that it is normal and okay to be hotter. Temperatures in the 90°C+ range are to be expected under heavy workloads unless you have a powerful cooling system.

TJUNCTION: 100°C

For what it's worth, dual-fan radiator water-cooling kits are neck-and-neck with the top-end air-coolers. I might be able to squeeze another 5C temperature improvement on my i7-6700K by scrupulously choosing a WC kit, and at this point, it isn't worth it.

Here's what I did instead:

Silicon Lottery De-Lidding/Re-Lidding service

My 4.7 Ghz overclock is about 2C cooler than a dual-fan EXOS WC kit with external radiator.

I have an H55 that spent about 4 years on my i7 2600K which was mildly overclocked to 4.2 Ghz. Temps never went over the low 60's C . I transferred the H55 to my Ryzen 5 1600, also mildly overclocked at 3.85 Ghz. It also never goes beyond low to mid 60's when stress testing.

I will say though that I never actually used the fan that came with the H55. I've got a Corsair SP 120, High Static Pressure fan on it ( https://smile.amazon.com/Corsair-SP120-High-Performance-Twin/dp/B007RESFVI/ref=sr_1_fkmr2_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1503946136&sr=8-1-fkmr2&keywords=cooler+master+high+static+pressure&th=1 ) I've got the fan set to run and minimal speed/near silent unless the CPU goes over 50C which it rarely actually does except during stress testing. Of course if it does start spinning up it can be quite loud - but that doesn't really happen in my normal usage.

Since you say you are not overclocking, I have to say there is either something wrong with the H55 or else it isn't mounted properly. I cant imagine a non-overclocked i7 770k getting to 97 otherwise.

PS: my case is also well ventilated.

If ur running with no gpu the igpu kicks out a fair bit of heat too

Secondly 140 single rad is not enough for a 7700k it's a hot cpu h100 or air cool equivalent is what I would recommend

amds chips are no where near as close to there temp max as before

My 4790k at 4.9ghz delidded hit 78 degrees under stress with my h110

1700 4ghz at 1.4.25v max temp 52 both have a max temp of around 100 degrees before throttling

Amd is doing a lot better with soldered chips than intel is doung with paste

You just can not compare the too

I wasn't attempting to compare AMD to Intel. I was just trying to warn readers that the maximum temperatures that they were accustomed to are no longer valid. For years, the maximum temperatures for CPUs from both companies were almost always in the 60°C or 70°C ranges:
http://www.pantherproducts.co.uk/posts/cpu-maximum-temperatures/

But that ~70°C value which has been ingrained in us is changing. Intel's TJunction Max is often now ~100°C. For example, see the 7700K specs: https://ark.intel.com/products/97129/Intel-Core-i7-7700K-Processor-8M-Cache-up-to-4_50-GHz Heck, Intel's Kaby Lake chips don't thermally shut down until 130°C (see page 110, table 6-12):
https://www.intel.com/content/www/u...esktop-s-processor-lines-datasheet-vol-1.html

Not only are the allowable temperatures higher, but with turbo boost 2.0 (and on some processors turbo boost 3.0), the chip is set to get to that temperature sooner and stay there as long as possible under heavy loads before thermal throttling occurs.

As for AMD and Ryzen, the TJunction Maximum is not as easily found. But many review sites are listing it at 95°C: http://www.overclockers.com/amd-ryzen-7-1800x-cpu-review/ AMD too will reach higher temperatures sooner with features like XFR that go automatically above the turbo speed if the temperature is low enough.

This isn't comparing AMD to Intel. But, they both increased their allowable temperatures to well over the ~70°C value that we were accustomed to. That will only happen under load, and proper cooling (including soldering of the heat spreader) can lower the temperatures that we usually see. However, temperatures of ~97°C are no longer unexpected.

Maybe you need a more aggressive fan profile?
Idle temps seem fine, but it shouldn't get that high under load.

I'm running a 7700k in a SFF PC with limited cooling, and even that doesn't get above 80 degrees running Prime 95.
