i agree, no matter how much we all may have enjoyed the festivities, that's money that would have much better been put towards helping feed the starving and cure the sick... it's just like all professional sports though, a giant waste of money.

sounds right, there were about 2200 athletes and I remember them saying it cost around 2 billion or so.

but keep in mind that money was largely made back through broadcasting rights (commercials) and increased tax revenue in SLC.

It's not funny. With all the important world officials that may have been present at the awards, nothing can happen with the world the way it is now. Plus, the US does not want to be the country to allow a terrorist attack to occur at an Olympic games, after what happened at Atlanta.

The money was not spent to benefit the athletes, it was spent so Salt Lake City could show off their city and the state of Utah.

It probably well did cost that much per athlete, I find that figure highly believable if you count construction of all the facilities and costs of all the security. Of course all that creative math doesn't help one bit if you don't total gross REVENUE as well and then decide if the games paid for themselves. I can say (there have been no tax increases in SLC) that the games were more than likely breakeven at the worst. Between broadcast rights and corporate sponsorships things get paid for.

Why is it a waste, because you didn't enjoy it? I enjoyed it and so did many other people, although I agree that the cost is a bit steep. You do have to realize that a ton of money is also gleened from the olympics so it's really just a case of it taking money to make money.
