Well cons??, Prescotts run extremely hot, they don't overclock that great, and in most applications; such as games the Prescott does extremely bad, depending on which model you have. They are fairly more expensive than AMD64 CPUs.

On the otherhand for the Pros? Prescotts along side with alot of other P4 based CPU's have a great reputation for encoding, decoding and running multi-tasks. Thats about it.

Prescott is not as good as A64 in games, "extremely bad" is just fanboy talk.

You will need to pay careful attention to cooling, but "extremely hot" is also more fanboy talk.

Newegg has the P4 550 on sale for $283.

Ok, It runs cool then, and Athlon 64's and Pentium M's are blocks of ICE.

Fanboy talk in the opposite direction is no better. Just tell the truth.

In that price range, I think I'd hold out for one of the upcoming 600-Series Prescotts with 2MB Cache & EMT64.

[*]Pentium 4 630 3.0GHz 800MHz FSB 2MB Cache (EM64T) $224
[*]Pentium 4 640 3.2GHz 800MHz FSB 2MB Cache (EM64T) $273
[*]Pentium 4 650 3.4GHz 800MHz FSB 2MB Cache (EM64T) $401

The 600-Series CPUs seem to run Cooler than the previous steppings, as well as having 64-Bit capability.

Of Course you'd probably want better RAM than the 4-4-4/5-5-5 stuff that they used in the X86-Secret Preview.

To say that Prescott?s have no problems and don?t run very hot would be a lie, If Im such a fanboy why did I bring products that are far superior from both camps ( Pentium M ? Banis, AMD ?K8) ? surely If I was an AMD fanboy I would have dismissed a Intel product without regard etc.

You say tell the truth ?> Ok, Prescott run hot , clock for clock slower then the northwood, only good strong point is multitasking and encoding, an Athlon 64 system (chosen over Pentium M because it more rounded) would be a better choice, this aint about the athlon 64, its about the pro?s and cons of Pentium 4?s.

Pro?s : Multitasking, encoding

Cons: Runs hot, gets beaten by ?Rival? chips in most benchmarks

From a fanboy

I don't know what you are talkking about. No one said anything about Prescott not having any problems.

The below is nothing but fanboy speak. I will counter it every time I see it, and that's what I did. You should too.

Prescotts run extremely hot, they don't overclock that great, and in most applications; such as games the Prescott does extremely bad, depending on which model you have.

I am beginning to pick out my first A64 system components, by the way. It will go nicely with my Prescott, which I love.

I can only fault the "such as games the Prescott does extremely bad," quote., which wasnt by me, so why you point the finger ?

But dont quote me, a guy who owns a 2.8C & a 2000 axp, and who's looking into a new laptop (pentium M) and who's goona build a A64 revision E rig in the summer a fanboy.

It's usually wrong to generalize. Prescott dominates Northwood in Doom3, for instance.

Well, my 2 cents- the below system is being returned for a refund for 2 reasons-

1. Been having various troubles from day one (hardware issues)

B. The Athlon 64 is a VERY poor performer in the apps that I bought the computer to use, DVDShrink, Premiere and Photoshop.

It's at best half as fast as a P43.4HT and at worst a third as fast. Excellent game performace, pathetic, and I mean pathetic performance on MPEG2 encdoding and video rendering. It's not much faster than my old XP2400. Since I bought a new PC to do mainly do these things, it just wasn't cutting it. Back to a P4 for me.

I am a current owner of a LGA775 P4 3.6, a P4 2.8c S478 and a A64 3500 S939 - so from my experience;

Pro - If your into overclocking, its as good as any other processor. My 3.6 will do 4.0 anb I have a 3.4 that ran 3.8
- You gotta love the HT - sweet

Con's - Run very HOT - hotter than a S478 Prescott. I had a hard time getting it reasonably cooled.
The stock HSF mounting mechanism is poor at best - I loved the S478
If your using the I915/925 chipset, you have to go PCIe on the video. More $$ for
no performance improvement. Same holds true for DDR2

As usual, IMHO.

I get tired of all the bullshit about the prescotts running hot myself, granted they do run hotter than the northwoods. My 3.6es runs 4.25 on air and hits 62c running 2 F&H clients and plaing Doom 3. I run it 24/7 at 4ghz and it never hits 60c. As far as games, I fail to see how anything can make my games run better except a vmod on my X800XT. I sure don't think an A64 will make a noticable improvement over a 4.25ghz prescott in any game. Every bench I've seen with an A64 that is even close to mine has them running fairly close to the same or worse temps than I get...... and very few A64's will oc enough to bench close to it anyway. When I was getting ready to build this new system I considered going with an FX55, after reading all the crap that gets posted I had to go with the prescott just so I wouldn't get lumped in with the type of people that post that stuff.

I fail to understand why anyone can't just appreciate what someone is able to do with thier choice of cpu, video card, etc.. why do the amd people have to put down everyone that isn't running what they have? IMO, it makes you and Amd look pretty sad.
