7800 GTX upgrade - Options?

Hi Guys,

Quick question;

A colleague of mine has an old set up which he is planning on upgrading (CPU +MB +Ram)

He is hoping to keep his beloved 7800 GTX 512 but I think he would need to upgrade it to play the likes of BF3 + any games from the last 2 years +

Well, when I say ‘think’ I really mean ‘Know’. If we could just inform him on this thread that he needs upgrade his GPU with something more muscular that would be great.

Also what would you recommend? He would like to spend £150 mark if needed to on a GPU

I don't know video card prices in the UK, but pretty much any video card he can get for 150 pounds should be better than a very old 7800gtx.

Also, he will need to upgrade for BF3.

I believe the *8800gt* is recommended for BF3 *low*, so yeah he needs a new card.

He should list what games he want to play. There are lots of games that came out within the last two years that are easy on the videocard.

That said, for BF3, he needs to replace the videocard.


and here in the U.S. of A., currently the best deals are on Radeon 6850/6870 which should be in his price range.

Isn't the Cyclone sort of a fan noise nightmare?

I'd stick to the EVGA SC 460 for £125 shipped or, for £138 shipped, Gigabyte 560 OC. Same chip, EVGA is at 763 (~15% over stock), Gigabyte at 830 -- ~10% faster.

Stock 460 is about = stock 6850 (maybe a shade slower), so both of these should be faster than your linked card.
