7800GS benchmark results

So I recently upgraded from an X800XL to a 7800GS AGP (Evga CO Superclocked - friend sold it to me for $150). So I'm running 3d Mark 06 to make sure that my numbers are normal.

With the card at 460/1350, my score was 3112 at 1280 x 1024. Vsync off, set to quality in the Nvidia CP. My CPU is an Athlon 64 3200+ Clawhammer (2.0Ghz). Anyone recommend specific settings for the Nvidia CP? Also, I'm using the 91.31 officials.

Does that number sound right, or am I looking at a fresh install of my entire system?

Edit: I received some excellent information below. Nonetheless, in an effort to squeeze the absolute most out of my "last ever AGP card!", I noticed in some 7800GS reviews that 3dMark 06 scores for a 440/1.3 setup were in the 3300 range. From what I can tell, 3dMark06 doesn't really take your CPU into account, so could it be that, for instance, the 81.98 drivers were producing higher results on 3dMark 06 than the 91.31s? Does anyone recommend a specific Nvidia driver?

Edit #2: I am running HL2 at 1680 x 1050, 2xAA/8xAF without any hiccups, so that's good news. AND, when I tested for "optimal frequencies" in the Nvidia CP, it came up at 521/1.47. I love free speed like the next person, but doesn't that seem a bit high? Is Nvidia's "optimal frequencies test" accurate in general? For now, I scaled it down to 490/1.42.

Shouldnt that be set on performance ?

I could certainly adjust it to performance, but wouldn't that degrade the image quality a bit? Or is there no difference?

Yes, it will affect the IQ. Especially on mip maps lol . But in a price of little peformance gain...are you just happy with the card overall with all the games you played ?

That's why I thought it would be best to leave the setting at quality: that's how I'm going to play games. I haven't tried any yet because I wanted to make sure that the 7800GS was running properly. It's the only reason I ran 3dMark 06. I will try a couple of FPSs shortly. From what people are saying, it looks like the numbers are normal. I'll try it at performance to see if there is a noticeable gain.

For regular games, should I set it to Best Quality or just Quality?

I would set at quality IMO

When I compare my system to others on the 3d mark site with 7800gs's, I notice my 7800 overclock is one of the best, but people with an overclocked 800fsb northwoods are killing me. Like I said the weakest part of my setup is memory speed and, lack of fsb.

I wouldn't worry about pts on 3dmark06. It is the experience in gameplay, that really matters

Well, I ran two more tests:

Performance - 3126
Best Performance - 3183

Looks like I won't need to do a fresh install. Unless someone else is producing far better numbers with a similar setup.

Hah! This is the last upgrade my AGP rig will ever get. But I wanted Scorched Earth to run at 600FPS, not 500FPS. I needed this.

P4 3.0GHz
Intel D875 PBZ mobo
1GB RAM
36GB Raptor
eVGA 79800GS CO Superclock (using original drivers still)
View Sonic XM2025 LCD (1680x1050 Resolution)
Audigy2 Platinum Sound Card
Creative 6.1 Speakers

I love this setup! Best AGP system I have ever had. Also the last. Soon as the new Conroe SLI mobos comes out its going to be regulated to a backup pc. A new E6600 SLI PCIe system will take over as my main gaming sytems.

Your score should go to like 3800 which is good

edit: and try these drivers-http://www.ngohq.com/home.php?page=nvidia

Yep, it's currently set to 499/1.42, and running stable. Played an hour of BF2 last night at 1280 x 1024, 2xQ AA, 8xAF and it played VERY smoothly, much more so than my old X800XL. I think I may move the image quality tab to Best Quality, as I do see some shimmering, which I think may be the result of Nvidia's optimizations (Anisotropic sample, mip map, and trilinear). And BF2 doesn't seem to react well to driver-forced anisotropic settings.

Does anyone recommend leaving them on?
