Anybody agree with me that this card is Expensive, and doesn't have the performance to back it up?
**Edit**
Might as well upgrade to a pci-x board at this price..

Yes, it sucks compared to the 7800GT. However, if you're an AGP user, you simply don't have many options. Basically there is the X850XT and the 7800GS, with the 7800GS being a hair faster and also cheaper.

Upgrading to PCI Express isn't cheap. You need to buy an entirely new motherboard and CPU, not everyone wants to do that. I'm sure a lot of people are waiting for AM2 before they upgrade.

Basically, Nvidia and ATI have left AGP owners hanging. The 7800GS is the best high end AGP card you can get.

I agree, but they could've at least kept the extra pipes on it right? I mean that should've been possible, to have 20 instead of 16...

Sure they could, but the point is they don't have to. ATI hasn't released any of the X1xx cards for AGP; the only competition to the 7800GS is the now venerable X850XT.

Clearly Nvidia and ATI want people to upgrade to PCI Express. They get money from chipset sales; when you buy your new PCI Express motherboard, they make some money. They'd rather you buy a motherboard and a GPU rather than just a GPU.

Ding ding ding!

What I've been saying all along. They are in a position to create their market.

not only that i think it costs more than it should becuase they are keeeping an old technology alive.......because this is AGP only it requires the HSI chip, and because that chip costs money to produce and stick on a PCB the whole card costs more.

But it was just released not long ago. Traditionally cards go down in price a few weeks after hitting the market. Would it still "suck" if it went down to $250?

Ugghh don't get me started on this....Even though a manufacturer controls a certain market people can choose to forgo the product entirely. Between Micro$oft and decisions like this- makes me want to give up gaming and switch to Linux!

I'm relatively certain that my 6800GT is actually faster than the 7800GS
(I'm at 425/1.16 currently)

I forgot what basis i used for this.

That chip doesn't cost that much, from what I hear it's only like $10. Altho you do have to figure in the new PCB traces, instead of using the newer PCIe PCB. So there is a small amount of charge for that chip and what it takes to change it from PCIe to AGP.

Now, as mentioned they do have the market cornered so to speak. ATI/nVidia both want it this way. More money means everything to stockholders, that's who will benifit from this along with the companies.

Does the 7800GS card suck? No more than an AGP X850XT PE does. Ask people what they think of the ATi counterpart and you will have your answer. It is a great card for someone who wants a better gaming experience without buying 2-3-4 more parts for a rig. Not exactly exstatic about the pricing, but it will settle in time. But still, it is cheaper than X850XTPE.

No matter how you try to trash this card, it is still worth atleast a look from an AGP owner. A 6800GS AGP may be a better choice, 'if' it can be unlocked. Even if it stays locked though, it still does a decent amount of work.

For someone like myself, who has never experience any type of high end gaming, this is a dream come true. I would love to play/see DoD:s on a 7800GS. Currently I am playing that game @ 800x600 medium. Wouldn't you wanna try 12x10 4AA? That would be sweet!

In the end, it is still up to the individual to decide. Each of us have our own values, likes and dislikes. I may choose to buy this card and think it's the best thing since sliced bread, but you, on the other hand, may think it's the biggest piece crap ever. To each his own

It sucks compared to what other AGP card?

It's slightly faster than the X850XT plus it has a bunch of extra features and on average costs about $50 less.

I agree this card could have been (should have been) sooo much better, but it's still the best AGP card on the market.

I agree.. They are just out to rip-off AGP users..
They are made with "problemed" GTX parts..
But for those who don't like to bother with upgrading mb, reinstall os, etc
they have no choice.. it is the best AGP videocard available.

maybe when price go down ..

Duuuude, chill out... all I was saying is I saw this for sale for $350~ and I checked how well it compares to current top agp cards, and it barely edges them out. This should blow everything else away like the 7800 line did for pci-e, not just be barely better. But they're for sure one master company behind everything. I just found out the other day how ford owns volvo, and a bunch of other "foreign" car company's, it's just like that, cracked me up when I heard it.

I think so

I'd give $250 for it if they will be able to unlock to 20 pipes.

Hell, I'd pay more then $250 for it for 7800gt specs (I'm happy with my 6800gt though)

So 7800GS's can't be unlocked or is it just that no one has figured out how to do it yet?

Totally Agree. Its better than the X850XT PE but it still sucks for its price. Get a 7800GT and upgrade to a cheapo PCI-E mobo (if your not on an althlon XP system or a 478 system)

Although there is an argument for people who dont already have a 939 agp board (therefore would have to get a whole new processor as well), it just seems like a means-to-an-end kinda move like the x1800 series was, just pushing those last people out of AGP by making video cards that are just as expensive but not on par performance wise.
