If true, that's such crap. It prevents poorer people from ever touching one because the supply dries up before the prices come down. Yet they introduce new generations at higher and higher prices. Bah.

I'm banking on ATI's R590 (which will apparently be called X1800GTO and be available in early March) to keep pressuring the prices down for cards like the X1800Xl and 7800GT.

If I can't find a card similar (or better in performance) to a 7800GT for between $220 and $250....I'll take a "venerable" X850XT for $170

Hmm, so that's why 7800GT prices have been so low lately. Great time to buy one if you want one, I doubt the 7900GT will hit $240 anytime soon.

If the 1900XTX beats two 7800GTs in SLI (and from what I hear it does) then there is no reason to really get two GTs IMO.

Also if they can produce the 7900 series for the same price or a bit cheaper then I can see why they would want to discontinue the 7800s.

Actually, benchmarks show that the GT SLI and 19XT trade wins back and forth and remain pretty close... though it really depends on the game, the settings, and who did the benchmark ;-)

One example would be TechReport. There are others that show similar results.

I think the ONLY way I would consider going 2x GTs vs XT(x) right now is if I planned on selling the GTs sometime within the next few months (and already had an SLI mobo with a good PSU). Those $250 cards will likely resale for around that same price in 3 months down the road, whereas the $500 19XT probably won't hold on to its $500 value. But all that seems like a bit of a stretch and requires a good deal of planning and calculation... something I'm not likely to do. Me personally-- I'm waiting until I am playing a killer game that is choking my current gpu-solution at the settings I want to play at, and THEN upgrade to the best bang-for-buck at that time.

It's worth noting that those EVGA 516 cards have a significant factory overclock (the core is actually 470mhz on those) and perform much closer to reference GTXs than the reference GTs that most sites benchmark.

I'm looking to upgrade soon just so I can move away from SLI, but at the same time I want something that's as fast or faster across the board. As stated earlier the X1900 XTX doesn't beat the GTs in everything and is actually quite a bit slower in the Doom-based games despite being much faster in FEAR. Hopefully the G71 will be faster in everything, although if the Inquirer's latest rumor is to be believed, I don't have great hopes for that card either.

I was going to sell off one of my GTs a few weeks ago but never got around to it. I guess the ebay prices have probably fallen a bit in the meantime. I better make sure I do that soon; I would like to get about $250, which is probably still possible if I sell it quickly.

I'm waiting to see what the 7900GT brings to the table, but will prolly pick up another eVGA 516 card to SLI with, esp. if it's ~$250. I have mine OCed beyond GTX speeds, so HOT!!!
