7800GT idling at 50C

My new case hasn't arrived just yet and I'm wondering if this is too high of a temperature for idle? When I say idle, I mean I just started the computer after reinstalling windows. The temperature is being taken from Nvidia's driver software.

The drivers will shut down the card if you get to an unsafe limit. The real test is if you run into game crashes and or artifacts while playing. 50C is not that bad.

A $15 case and 450W powersupply with 15 on the 12 rail just doesn't do so great for cooling

lol, just wonder what a case and a power supply have to do with system temps? case maybe the design you could find a cheap case with good airflow.

The 50°C at idle dont matter. What matters is where the temps are at under full load. 70 or 75°C for load would still be within specs. For example, nvidias driver would issue a warning and downclock if the core reaches 115°C - and thats the default setting. Though, I wouldnt risk letting it reach that temperature.

Jesus Christ, I've never had a graphics card before....this kicks ass.... couple hours playing Battlefield 2, doom 3...temperature reached a max 61C.. I've never been able to use the highest specs....Never going back to integrated

Good case cooling will help that baby out, mine will idle anywhere between 39-44C depending on how long it's been idleing, never loads higher then about 61C

Have you tried overclocking it yet??

its an EVGA 7900GT OC SE, so slightly overclocked already, but I don't want to chance it anymore than I am on this generic powersupply. When my Antec comes in, no doubt about it

actually...what is kind of odd....Mine is clocked at 470/1100 when it should only be 460 1050 for the OC SE version...bonus mhz...hot damn

edit: I wanted to see what coolbits thought my "optimal frequencies" would be...ends up going to 497/1150...whew.....niiiiice

The "optimal" frequencies tend to produce artifacts in some games but not all. These settings for my card were similar to what you posted there (485/1180) and it would run most of the recent games like Fear without visible artifacts, but I got them in some older games for some reason. So I backed down to where it is now.

These are normal temps dude for a modern card. Older generations and low to mid range video cards run cooler but they are also much slower.

Cool, I've heard several people saying that with the recent batch of these cards. Hopefully I'll get the same stock speeds. The difference is tiny (only 10mhz on the core, memory speeds are the same), but I'll take it.

As many have said, that's a normal temp for a vid card. Get a heatsink that exhaust out of the case if you're looking for cooler temps.

Well, for some odd reason my case was delivered on a Saturday....oh well, I'm not complaining...anyways. I've got it stuffed inside this HTPC case and it still idles at 50C. No improvement over the other case, but eh....Ah well.

I never understand why people compared the idling temperature without stating the ambient temperature. The different between the ambient to the idling temperature is the parameter to be compared not the idling temperature itself.
