7800gt + NV5...how much better?

I have an evga 7800gt that runs about 40C idle and 65C loaded. Thinking of getting this (saw it in the Hot Deals forum) to improve temps and make my system quiter.

Can anyone comment on how much cooler I can expect my GPU to run and if the card will be noticible quieter. I'm not really satisfied with my system's noise level right now (all stock fans in system: CPU, the little mobo one, case 120mm, and video card). I think the CPU or the GPU is the one making the most noise.

Load temps for me were in the low to mid fifties, with a 7800GT @ 485/1150. Fan noise was significantly reduced; if the rest of your system is quiet it's very noticable.

If you want your system to be quiet, you'll probably have to do something to the chipset fan as well. Either replace it or use speedfan to lower the RPM.

GPU1 50C
GPU2 51C

load
GPU1 79C
GPU2 83C

NV5 Silencer

idle:
GPU1 45C
GPU2 43C

load

A few more questions before I pull the trigger:
1) Is the stock CPU fan on my 3700 noticible loud? I'm not sure if its the GPU or CPU making the all that racket.
2) What is the installation procedure for this? Is it pretty simple (ie, remove old fan, and stick this puppy on)? Do I need to buy thermal paste or anything like that.

thanks.

To find out which is the noisy fan, just reach inside and stop the fan moving for a second or so - I'd suggest putting your finger on the fan hub to stop it, not sticking your finger in the blades I suspect your video card fan will be louder than CPU.
You should also test your chipset fan as well - those tiny 40mm fans can be very whiney.

The new cooler should come with thermal paste, installation is fairly easy. You might want to consider the zalman VF700 as well as the arctic cooler - performance is about the same.

The stock AMD fans can get rather loud when your CPU is under load. I've never used the stock AMD heatsink myself but if the racket you hear is mainly closer to a "whine" then it's your GPU.

Installation is pretty simple, you just need to remove the old fan and then screw in four screws to mount the new fan. But you need to make sure that the HSF is making good contact with the core and the memory chips. As for thermal paste, it comes with it already applied so you don't need any. You could clean it off and then use a thin layer of AS5 but the difference that would make probably isn't significant . . .

Thanks guys. Pulled the trigger on this. Now I'll see what else is making all that noise in there.

Got this tonight and installed it. Much quieter now.

Temps were at 37C/60C for idle/load and now are 31C/55C. Not much difference, but the noise was reason enough.

Ok, now how do i oc this piece???

Have you noticed any change in the load temps on your CPU when gaming? Theoretically the fact that hot air from the gpu is being exhausted instead of being recycled back into the case should help CPU temp as well, though i'm not sure how much of an effect it would have.

Banzai - No, not much change in CPU temps. How come your video card isn't listed in your sig?

Speed - Is coolbits > riva for oc'ing?

I dunno but I just bought one and will find out soon. PRetty much, if its any quieter at all than the TORNADO of a stock fan, ill be happy. I cant even leave my computer on at nights with the damn stock video card fan, it gives me headaches.

I had an NV5 on my 6800GT, it was the best cooler ever. IMO way better than the zalman GPU coolers.

I loved it... I still want to get one for my 7800 eventually.

Whats the equivalent to prime95 "Torture Test" in rhdribl? What settings do I use to maximize stress to the GPU? I can't full screen - get a "not enough video memory error"

Man this thing is kicking the crap out of my card - almost feel bad for it. I made it as big as it would go and my card temps are now at 61C! Card normally idles at 35C, and I've seen 55-57C in games.

Does this hurt my card in the long run if I let it run?

I think ATITOOL does the same thing for a graphics card that prime95 does for a CPU. It stops (or at least informs you with a message) if there are artifacts so you know that something is wrong the same as prime95 that stops if there are errors in the calculations.

rsdr... (whatever its name is) does for a graphics card what SuperPi does for a CPU. It just heats it up but does not let you know if something is wrong.

It definately kept my 7800GT cooler and most importantly to me is quieter. I had to return it to the Egg because my mobo only has one free slot between the SLI connnectors. I am waiting for the Arctic Cooling Accelero X1 for Nvidia cards. It is a double slot cooler unlike the NV Silencer, which, was almost 3 slots!
