Which is not meant to diss the 7800GT, I'd just say 7800GTX is a closer match to 6800GT SLI.

which is fair, we are however talking about 6600GT's, not 6800GT's.

Ooops, my bad. I do have a 6600GT SLI set as well. I meant to say I've only compared 6600GTs and 7800GTXs.

Ya think you could do some benches for me Rollo???

Nice info Rollo. Thanks.

You're welcome.

What I liked best about that set was I basically proved my suspicions that the difference between 6600GT SLI and a 6800GT was 2X AA. (i.e. if you run the 6600GT SLI at 2X8X it will outperform a 6800GT at 4X8X)

I did this so people could evaluate what sort of upgrade path adding a second 6600GT was. Everyone knows the 6800GT is mostly better, but I wanted to quantify the difference as a lot of people were posting "6600GT SLI SUX!" when in fact it's an pretty good gaming rig at 2X8X. (and there are situations where it's better, like some 16X12 4X16X HL2,16X12 4X8X Halo, and 16X12 4X16XDoom3 situations, or gaming at 20X15 0X16X)

This isn't true either, the 7800GT would fall somewhere between one and two 6800GTs IMO. (although I only have 6800GT SLI and 7800GTX SLI for comparison)

I do know that up to 16X12 4X8X 6800GT SLI comes in at around 7800GTX SLI performance, and in some cases like Doom3 the 6800GTs win.

Which is not meant to diss the 7800GT, I'd just say 7800GTX is a closer match to 6800GT SLI.

but the 7800GT is only 20% slower then GTX AT MOST, usually it's around 15%. Also 7800GT is a little better overclocking potential then GTX becuase its stock speed is lower.

Rollo seem to think that SLI means 2x the speed which is VERY FAR FROM THE TRUTH. Try to understand the difference between 2x cards and 2x speed.

One thing I've seen on Anandtech reviews (among others) is that 6600GT SLI tends to run out of gas at and above 1600X1200 (with or without AA, depends on the game), compared to 6800GT/7800 series cards.

I'd stick with the 7800GT, even though the 6600GT's may be close in many games.

Your sarcastic remark is noted, thanks. I guess I could start a thread bagging the R520 and whooping it up over how good or bad crossfire will be, instead I wanted hard facts not rumour.

@Rollo, thanks for those numbers.

Could someone with either of these options please bench AoE3 Demo with everything maxed out at 1280x1024.

My original request^^

I can't play at 16x12 so have no interest in what the 7 series does at high resolution. I appreciate your input though.

Squat seems to misquote Rollo, as I've never said that SLI means two times the speed so you can't post a link to it and prove you didn't just make that up?

No one asked about "OCing potential" did they? What I posted was accurate, what you posted was a mess.

You'd be wrong about that Jiffy.

If you go through my old posts you'll find links to a FS high res comparison where 6600GT SLI stomps a 6800 GT at 20X15 0X16X, and XBit benches where a 6600GT SLI edges a 6800GT at Doom3 and HL2 16X12 4X16X, and a FS bench showing 6600GT SLI beating a 6800GT at Halo 16X12 4X8X.

Depends on the game, but you're sort of right in that AA and high res is no friend of 6600GT SLI.

I would really appreciate any benches on AoE3 demo. Using Fraps, at 12x10, 4x AA 16xAF, all settings on and maxed out. Thanks anyone with a 7800GT and or 6600GT SLI.

Most people are missing the other points, what are the rest of your specs? What CPU memory etc. You might get a nice boost from a cpu upgrade and / or ram

I have 3500+ Clawhammer, 2 gig of value RAM,Seagate NCQ 120 gig HDD....I have a 19" LCD with a native Res. of 1280x1024. I canplay the game great on my Leadtek 6600GT extreme if I turn shadows and shaders to medium at about 35FPS avg with a minimum of about 28FPS. But when I turn all on High/V. High, I get 15-20 FPS tops. AoE3 is CPU intensive, from what I can gather, but I'm fairly certain I can get the FPS I want with a 7800GT.

I guess I could wait for a 7600GT or the equivalent. That may be the best fit for my system, and will most likely be the solution best suited to my lower resolution LCD. The X1600XT looks promising too, if they ever find their way to market.
