Decided to monkey with my 7800GT tonight and see how high I could push it before it got unstable, at least in 3D Mark 05's eyes, it was game stable at 510/1280 in DOD:source and UT2K4 and AOE3, in 3Dmark it would freeze on the 3rd test. backed down a little and got it stable 3DMark stable at 505/1270.....8049 marks...not too shabby

EDIT: I'm debating on moddings my card in someway....stupid plastic heatsink cover holds in wayyyyyy too much heat...hmm might be a project for winter break from college

Then how can you explain how my computer, which is comparable to mostr others here, is scoring less? DeathBUA only has 30 MHz core on me, 100 MHz mem, and I find it hard to believe that there is that large of a difference at those clock speeds....

Is he using an LOD tweak? What are his graphic settings at (high performance, high quality, etc.)? Is his cpu faster than yours? Try to find out what his exact specs are and than you can figure out why his is scoring higher.

His specs are in his sig...my proc is faster, ram is same, slower HDs....his computer would seem in all ways to be lesser. I put my driver settings to High Performance....I'm using the Xtreme-G 81.87s.

3Dmark05 is almost ALL GPU speed. My card at stock speeds (445/1070), can barley break 7000. But at 510/1200 it gets over 8000. Your score with your card at 480/1100 sound a bit low, but it's not too low. I'm trying to find a link on overclocking the 7800 series, but can't. The 7800 has three core clocks. Only changes in the main/stardard clock of over 26mhz will effect the other two clocks. More on this when I find a link.

...so a OC of 510mhz on a core may be much higher than one of 480mhz.

I'll edit this when I find more info.

**the answer: Link

Try the new 81.94's they give quite a boost to me....8119 marks at just 475/1210

Now gonna try things at 505/1270 probably hoping for 8300 marks maybe more?? We'll see

Yea they are pretty nice Chris.....just retried at 505/1270 and scored 8404!! Which I know means little all things considered cuz it's just 3D Mark but all things considered I'm a happy camper

Here's a better link on the multi clock GPU:

Bah if you score 8500 I'll look upon you with jealous eyes, I'm busy with homework tonight so I cant really mess around with it much

*mutters under his breath about how much nursing school sucks*

And when I say homework I'm doing a roughly 35 page nursing physical, health history and plan of care that is due tomorrow And I've only got about 10 pages finished ATM....so yea i'll keep checking things here but I dont have time to benchmark tonight at least.

What do you guys use to OC? I use the Xtreme-G 81.87s, and I use the built in driver speed sliders, and when I know a certain speed works, I redo my bios with nibitor (I use only 1 performance level in nibitor) and then flash it with a floppy...

Coolbits and just regular nVidia forceware driver sets...

I always use coolbits/driver, and never clock it over the auto-detect. I even normally back it down to a nice round number. ie: if it auto-detects 512/1220, I drop it to 510/1200. I've used RivaTuner and PowerStrip, but I like to keep may installed programs lean. Though, Riva is nice to monitor temps.

No, I just OC the 3D clock. eVGA's bios doesn't have seperate 2D/3D clocks on their 7800GT's.
...well, they started to, but released a bios update to clock them together.

What do you use to alter the bios then (or do you stay on the windows level?) I find that flashing the BIOS is much more stable...

I haven't modded my bios on this card (7800GT). So far I've only OCed my new card through Windows. But I have done some bios modding on my old 9500pro, 5900XT and eVGA 6800 LE-Ultra 256MB. I used NiBiTor off MVKTech. They also have a WIDE selection of BIOSes and flashing utilities. As far as flashing utilities, WFFLASH was great for <6800, but you'll need to use nVFlash for >/= 7800. NibiTor is great for modding the GPU and memory clocks. But becareful with modding the voltage. I wouldn't push the voltage past X+0.1v*. And use RivaTuner to monitor the temps.

*I wouldn't even mod the voltage without after market cooling.

The most I have overclocked my BFG 7800GT is 485 core and 1.15 on the memory. Runs very stable at that setting and get me 7904 on 3dMark05 so I am happy with it.

Sorry a bit off-topic but my score is as follows:

Chip: 7800GT

Brand: Leadtek

Stock speeds

3dmark05 score: 50xx !!

Running the card on an A64 3500, Asus A8N sli, forceware 81.85, 1gb ram, WinXP SP2

Anyone got any clever ideas about what's going on? Bios settings, power etc?

Thanks in advance

You and I got about the same set-up. You should be gettin' over 7000 @ stock. Try running a driver cleaner and installing the new nVidia drivers. I don't know much about the Asus SLI board, but do you have your SLI paddle set right? Which PCI-E slot are you using? Is your RAM running dual channel. Make sure your RAM is running at it's proper speed/CAS. PCI-E doesn't have fast-writes, so that can't be it. Is your card getting enough juice. What size PSU are you using, and how many amps are one the 12v rail? Are you using a P2P in the background? Update VGA and MOBO BIOSes. When nothing else works, REFORMAT, and start clean. Good luck!

Thanks for the response - I've tried about 1/2 the things on your list including cleaning out the drivers!

Not sure about the PSU - it's a high quality Tagan but only 430W. I've connected up the card using a dedicated 6 pin connector from the PSU which seems to fit, but no idea of the amps on it. The card came with a 6 pin to 2x 4 pin molex connectors adapter - as an alternative to the 6 pin, am I supposed to plug a connector into each of those ie having 2 molex lines going into the card?

How do I tell if my ram is running dual channel/right speed?

Sorry for all the questions!
