Thanks for the kind words. Do you have any idea where I can get the best info on my MoBo. I need info on how to "lock" my RAM's Bus. As it is now, when I OC the FSB, I also get the increase in Memory speed. I tried clockin down the memory first, but still not helping. I am gonna try to drop the multiplier to 9x or 10x and then start bumpin the FSB. I DON'T want to start raising voltages. Scared to death of fryin my $400.00 CPU.

Oh, damn, you runnnin one of those dang 146s! My brother is waitin for his to show up. Ordered it a few days ago. Hearing GREAT things from that chip. I am thinkin bout gettin one too. Found a guy selling them for $171.00 Retail Box. Yes, it is THE 146....sku# OSA146BNBOX

So, tell me, how easy was it for you to get that badboy clocked 1gig over. I see you runnin liquid, the question is.....how high did ya get it on Air? Got any Benches? Would love to see what yours is pullin down.

My brother is gonna be running a 6800GT with a Gig of PC3200. What kinda #s ya think he will get with the 146 OC'd?

All three of the 146's would do 3.0GHz on air. Two are SuperPi 32M stable at 1.49V and the one I'm currently using is SuperPi 32M and OCCT stable at 2975GHz@1.39V.

Here are some of the benchmarks I've had a chance to run:
3DMark05
3DMark03

Your brother should get around 5000 in 3DMark05 with his rig, higher of course if he oc's his card.

I'd read Zebo's overclocking guide if you want some nice hints on how to get the most out of your rig.

with a nice overclock i scored 6000 exactly with my 6800gt, and this is with a s754 3200 newcastle @2550mhz

didnt see any artifcating. I just installed this card about an hour ago, so I have countless hours of tweaking to do, but looks promising so far!

Using ACS Silencer.

anyone got some tips on where I can find some compatible aftermarket coolers for the evga 7800gt?

Also, which might be the better ones to use.

Is there really no point in trying to overclock a BFG 7800 GT OC? There isn't one person on this thread that has even attempted it. What's the word, are they simply bad at overclocking?

Edit: oops, there is one person that tried it... does anyone know if they are simply not great at over clocking more than they already are.

Uhh here is my bfg 7800gt oc... I can get it to do 465 max for core. Memory I'm running 1210mhz stable, but the core just doesn't go high.. WTF!>?!!?? I have a VF700 cooler on it and an additional 120mm fan blowing max speed (75 CFM) on the card...

Are you using stock cooling fan? An aftermarket kit like Zalman or NV5 should get you to the next level, or more stable. Mine is 482/1220 with NV5 Silencer and rock solid for two months now. Granted it's an XFX not eVGA.

i bought an MSI NX7800GT about a week ago. i never tried OCing wit hthe stock cooler as i immediatley replaced that POS with a Zalman 700 (the all copper version of course).

i'm not through testingyet, i also bought a new CPU/mobo/RAM at the same time so i'm still working on the CPU overclock mostly (a 3200+ venice, currenlty sits at 2.5GHz stable at 1.5V)

the 7800GT is up to 510 core/ 1200 RAM with the zalman, absolutely stable. counterstrike:source stress test went from about 117fps to 131 fps, with all options set to max and transparency AA enabled and set to supersampling, 4xAA/8xAF, at 1280x1024.

Nice OC Westfale!

I have a Gainward Ultra/3400PCX (7800GT) and could run it OCed to 458/1183 (400/1000 stock) with stock cooler and got 8124 in 3DMark05 and 4378 in 3DMark06 (CPU AMD64X2-3800+ OC 2470).

Just today I installed Zalman VF700Cu and thought I could get my card over 500 core but no! With Rivatuner I could get only 475/1215 (it did not allow higher core, test did'nt pass) and even then I had artifacts in 3DMark06, although minor. I had to lower OC to 470/1180. I noticed that GPU temp were lower, from 42->38C idle and from 61->56C load. Stress tested only with multiple runs of 3DMark06.

What could be wrong? Or is my card just of poor quality. Memory is 2.0ns GDDR3, is this the reason for weak OC result?

What kind of thermal paste did you use? The one delivered with the Zalman cooler?

when i removed teh stock cooler i noticed the chips in my card seem to be 2.0ns from infineon. still, coolbits itself OCed it to 500/1200 on the first try with the auto-OC button. 510 is the most i have gotten out of the core so far, but i haven't reallyhad time to play around with it yet.

as for paste, i use arctic silver 5.

as for your results, different chips OC differently. a while ago i had a radeon 9600PRO and heard how some people could OC the core from 400 to 500+, yet mine never went beyond 460, and thta was with a cooler from an 9800PRO. luck of the draw, i guess, but you have to remember that even a stock 7800GT is pretty top notch, and waaaay cheaper than a 7800GTX.

with a 517 I am currently at 470/1150 though that is because I have not bothered ocing the core yet. The nVidia decet thing says I can go to 483 on the core but I am betting it could be higher.

I have a question, do all the different versions of the evga 7800gt (515,516,517,51*) use the same mem chips and GPU?

Thanks

Thanks for your answer Westfale.

I might try with better paste then. I noticed also that heatsinks will "turn" 1-2 mm around their axis. I cannot tighten it more. Is this normal?

With some RAM tweaking I could run my card with 470/1211 without any artifacts in 3DMark06 resulting 4404 in overal score. However, that might also be result from my CPU OC to 2500 which i can use now with better overal cooling in my P180 case, thanks to Zalman. I'll run now stability tests for several hours to see if Zalman gives me more stable operation without artifacts.

I'm happy with my card, better price/performance than GTX.

I have a evga 7800GT CO SE (516). Mine auto detects @ 523/1200 with the stock cooler and paste. 523/1200 gets me a little over 8.5k in 05' and 4.7k in 06'. X2 4400+ @ 2.65GHz.

I installed VF700 again using Arctic Silver 5 paste but no success. All I can get is somewhat lower temps in 3D load, max 61C in Quake4 Demo, max 56C in 3Dmark06 and no artifacts when OC 465/1202. Have to run more tests today. Odd that cooler does not sit tight on GPU chip, it turns around the axis about 0.5 mm, thin layer of paste used. I have a Zalman 7700Cu installed on CPU and it sits tight, no movements. 3DMark06 gives 4404-4418 though which is quite good result IMO (SM2: ~1770, SM3 ~1740).

Hmm, to summarize pros and cons of my installation of VF700Cu on Gainward 7800GT:
+ silent (12V), fan easier to clean from dust, GPU and case temps lower
- minimal effect on OC, no fan rpm monitoring

So I did a little more tweaking and with a slight voltage increase I got the core up to 510 MHz easily and the mem up to 1.22 GHz giving me 8.4K in 3DMark05 with my Venice @ 2.7 GHz (it auto detects at 510/1.2 now . . .) with loads in the low fifties and idles @ 38-40 C (NV Silencer 5 Rev 3) I'm glad I started using the large window fan again . . . Now I'm considering whether I should increase the voltage to 1.7v on the core and around 2.1v on the mem . . .

eVGA 7800 GT CO (N517) - Auto detects @ 505/1200 with stock cooler. That's plenty fast so I'm leaving it there for now.
