Think about his position, he wants to play new games that still run like crap (i.e.crysis in dx10) on the newest cards. He is fine with older and his current game selection using the older card.

Makes sense.

That is what I thought also, but after reading reviews, this doesn't seem to be the case. The new HardOCP 8800GTS review shows that most settings in Cysis have to be left on medium, even at 1280x1024. I think I'm just frustrated with the games currently available in DirectX 10.

I finished Crysis at 1680x1050 resolution on medium settings. Smooth as silk with 8800GT, Q6600, and 4GB RAM.

You missd out on everything on very high and could you say that you'd play it again in 6months-1year after release just to see the visuals?

I never bought crysis because I want to play everything maxed when I experience it.

Just to play Crysis at mostly medium settings, even at my native resolution of 1280x1024? I think I'm about to cancel my Dell Asus order that is supposed to ship on 12/26. With the 9xxx geforces being common in 4 months hopefully for around $300 or $350, I'm satisfied for now playing Team Fortess 2 sans antialiasing...

Excellent logic, I would have thought the same.

I think it's decent logic too. I have to say that playing an fps on console is extremely hard though. Been a keyboard and mouse fps gamer for going on 7 years and I recently bought a PS3 and Resistance: Fall of Man. It took me about 45-60 minutes to adjust using the PS3 controller...

I found the Xbox 360 controller to lend itself well to fps games though. More spacious.

His current card is still high end for most people and DX10 hardware makes so little sense in regards that there is so little DX10 software available. When DX10 his en masse, it will be a good time to buy a new graphics card; but as long as his 7800GT still gets good frame rates at naitive resolution using lowest settings, then keep waiting.

Eh, the PC is my preferred gaming platform. Right now I only have two 6600GTs and I can't run any new games above minimum settings. It's worth it to me but I can see where it wouldn't be worth it to some.

not having an 8800gt, i can't compare my 7900gs oc, but i did have for a few days, an evga 8800gts 640 with 112sp..and sent it back 4 days later. my big issue was the lack of overscan on the drivers, but interestingly enough, i also ordered quake 4 from ncix as it was only 9.99 cents so i thought what the heck.i think the game was made in 2005 and don't know enough about gaming to know if it's a fair challenge to my system, but i had one heck of a fun time playing it with my 7900gs oc at high settings, 8x anti-aliasing and 1024 x 768 on my 53 inch bigscreen (first time i've played a vid game on my big screen..what a treat!) and not a hitch or stutter with my card. i was pleasantly surprised, and given i only play 1 vid game every 1 or 2 years and play it through over a weekend if possible, i realized for now, i'm quite happy with my 7900! when a 1 gig card that's super quiet for an htpc is out..and crysis is down to 10 bucks, then i'm there

Mmmkay...?!?

So you will pay the hypothetical $600 for the new NVidia flagship, as long as the MSRP is $599...?

As I've said before, the 8800GT allowed me, and many others, to step up into the world of 8800 GPUs. And with a little effort, I got mine for $228. Hardly too much for the performance it delivers.

The least expensive Video Card I have ever bought. Beats my 7950GT by a factor of 2:1 in terms of FPS.

Think of it this way...I spent 225 on my 8800GT and sold my 7800GT for 90; that nets a cost of only $135 for a 2-3x upgrade. How many people would be throwing out their CPU for a similar upgrade for the price? And for gamers, the upgrade on the GPU side impacts more games, on a greater scale...

just my $0.02

Well I got my son universe at war and it makes his 8800gt choke during battle at high settings and he's got 2gb of ram and an opteron 170.

The opteron 170 makes it choke, not the 8800GT.

Agreed. My 8600GTS is up for sale now for $125 and I bought my 8800GT for $220. I frankly don't see that as a bad investment at all considering I can overclock it and my processor a good bit for further future proofing.

I paid below MSRP for my 8800GT OC yesterday. You've just gotta look for deals and jump on them when you can.

If you are only playing at 1280x1024, what's the point in upgrading? The 7800GT should be able to play games decent enough at that resolution, even if you have to turn off AA/AF. In all reality, Crysis is the only game worth getting an 8800 series card for, and in my personal opinion, Crysis has very tired gameplay and is nothing new or genuine.

If you want to play Crysis, upgrade. If not, keep whatcha got until next gen, or at the very least keep what you have until you can get a newer monitor with a resolution above 1280x1024.

I am in the same boat as the OP. I've only got a 1280x1024 17" Dell LCD, and I don't really care about playing Crysis at ultra high settings. Everything else I can run at high with a 7900GT. I may have to turn down a setting here and there or turn down the AA/AF, but that doesn't bother me. I'll just pick up a used 7900GT until the next generation comes out and prices are driven down again. Should be my birthday by then anyways, and then I'll pick up a new LCD while I'm at it.

Just my .02

Don't worry. A reason will present itself sooner or later. You will know when that time comes.

I also have the XFX 7800 GT and getting a e8400 system now, but keeping the card for now...monitor is a 17" LCD so max res is 1280x1024...how about overclocking the card to the max, how much improvement will i see ?

Same boat as the original poster. Currently thinking about getting one of those new cards but I can pretty much play anything in full detail with a 8600gts on my 19" LCD. IF I get a 8800gt or 3870 I can easily max out settings but the graphical difference wouldn't be too far off. Mostly adding AA at the same resolution and few more fps which isn't really worth it.

Currently there isn't a new 3D engine on the horizon that will break cards other than what we have like Crysis. If you can play now you can pretty much play throughout 2008. I already finished Crysis @ medium settings and I get 60fps in COD4 and Unreal 3 maxed so what is the point?

Most certainly your 7800GT WILL NOT run COD4, World in Conflict, Dirt, Bioshock, Need for Speed: Pro Street, Chronicles of Riddick with Soft Shadows, Oblivion with everything on High (not even talking about enabling AA) at say 1600x1200. However, forget the numbers for a second: if you are satisfied with the performance you are getting, then don't upgrade until you feel the games are running too slow. This isn't an online ePenis race about who has the fastest card

What I disagree with is your general statement that it's "a bad upgrade". I mean if all day all you do is play Starcraft or Warcraft 3, sure you are correct. But that's like buying a Ferrari and complaining that it's not enough of an upgrade over a BMW 3 series if all day you just drive in a parking lot....

Anything recent like BF2142 and you are looking at tremendous performance difference:

BF2142 - 1280x1024 4AA/16AF
8800GT 512mb = 92.0fps
7800GT 256mb = 24.6fps

If you take out AA, BF2142 can easily be maxed out with 7800gt with acceptable frame rates.

Yet it still can't run crysis in it's full glory.

I don't know what you are upgrading from but you will be mostly video card limited. you will see some difference but it won't be much.
