I'm not going to believe it until I see it from someone other then the INQ, but I wouldn't be surprised if there were limited qualities (not because nVidia is withholding them but because clocks are so high).

The more I think about it it just doesnt make sense. If you can sell a ton of any product, why limit yourself to just a few, just to raise costs? Why not lower cost and sell more for a total higher profit.
I think the INQ is way wrong on this one. If there are low quantities, its probably due to yeilds.

that would be pretty low of them if it's true (which i doubt)...not good for us as consumers at all...

*waits for nvidia fanboys to change tack and say that it's perfectly ok and they support this behaviour in every way *

I believe that only 175,000,000 GeForce 7800 GTX 512MB's will be available so you better grab one and fast!

Might be a smart move to release slowly. See how many sales go down. If they sell well enough, then they will of course open the floodgates. I am seriously doubtful it's due to any yield problems at this point on a 110nm process.

how does that compare to two 7800GTs pricewise...pretty close and likely to get closer if the 512mb GTX is going to stay at it's rrp...unless they really pull a rabbit out of a hat i can't see it being faster than sli'd 7800GTs...

Very bad move if it turns out to be true. It doesn't matter if they want to outcompete the x1800XT as soon as possible with this ubercard, they shouldn't deviate from their hard launches. And just when we were starting to get used to them, too.

First, it's an Inquirer story. That should tell you alll you need to know, the are better than Beyond3d's WaltC for dreaming up fanciful fiction...

Dug777, I don't think many nVidia supporters will be changing their tune just yet, because the story is yet to come true? Does your reply indicate that although you own a nVidia card you aren't a nVidia supporter?

IF there is a grain of truth to this story (and we won't know that until after the actual launch) I would expect any low quantitites of the card to arise from availablility of the high speed memory being employed, not nVidia's evil world domination plans or TSMC's 110nm yields...

meh, i'd just like to see prices in the upper midrange fall so i can grab a 7800GT/x1800xl sometime soon, and a very high priced/limited availiability 512mb GTX isn't going to do much to help me there...especially if as i said in my second post, 7800GTs in SLI are a faster/cheaper solution...increased demand for that high/midrange part won't drive the price down unless nvidia flood the market with them as i understand it.

It's pretty much the introduction of 512mb cards for consumers (the 512mb x8xx / 6800 ultras released a while back notwithstanding), and both ATi and nVidia will likely charge as much as they think they are able to for the privilege. It hapeened with 64, 128, 256mb transitions too.

I'd say that price drops under the 512mb 7800GTX will depend on x1800XL pricing pressure and how soon ATi can make 256mb x1800XT's available.

I think it is stooopid for NV to 'hold back' and charge a high price for this card.... there is an article at Firing Squad where the X1800XT spanks a regular GTX in Call of Duty 2... and the XT is $50 - $100 cheaper than the supposed $650 price point for the GTX 512...

Also, a 7800GT sli setup is a lot faster than a regular GTX in those tests....

Go back to Econ 101 and learn about the supply/demand curve. You can either sell a ton of stuff with a low profit margin to earn a large profit (Wal Mart is a good example) or sell a smaller amount but at higher profit margins to earn a large profit. Back in the 1990s tech bubble people were selling items for a loss, but hey, they were going to make it up on volume sold. Right.

The market for $650 gaming video cards is small. It makes sense to limit production for these gaming cards, especially when the profit margin for $2500 Quadros is much higher and they are using the same chip.

This was my reply to a simular post in another forum:

Wanna know what i think? Too bad I'm tellin ya anyways! IT'S ALL ABOUT MARKETING! Think about it, your a company with a new card ready to hit the streets, and knowing that any information as well as disinformation, can and will work to your advantage. And also , you want to capitalize on your proffits, you 'leak' info that they are in 'short supply'. Now you have the enthusiest market by the balls, as soon as it hits the streets....they all buy it up. Soon after (two weeks), the price drops $50 and your other cards drop the same, but you had some smart marketing, You keep the performance crown all the while capturing sales too.

Hype, is a great marketing tool, and NVIDIA knows this. IMO this is what is happenning. Evidence? You want evidence? Too many companies are releasing this card. XFX/eVGA/Leadtech/BFG?.....it just seems too wide a release to be so 'limited'.

Anyways just my thoughts.

Do I have a career in marketing? SOMEONE GIVE ME A CALL!

:-D :-D :-D

I originally thought the same thing, but now, after analyzing some benchmarks a little deeper, I think I can make a case for the 512GTX being faster than SLI GTs, or at least as fast.

Take BF2 at 2048x1536 4xAA, for example: (from AT)
X1800XT.........56
GTX................41
SLI GTs...........71
Now, the GTs are looking good compared to everyone else. But if you were to throw a 512GTX in the midst, with as much ram as the great-performing XT, and a nice clock speed increase to boot, it could be a good match for the SLI GTs.

Another good example would be Quake4 2048x1536 4xAA/8xAF Ultra Quality
X1800XT.........48
GTX................35
SLI GTs...........43
Now, here we see the XT pulling ahead of the 256mb cards, even the SLI. A faster 512mb card would do even better I would think.

FiringSquad's new Call of Duty 2 1600x1200 4xAA 8xAF results are interesting as well:
X1800XT.........30
GTX................24
SLI GTs...........39
The fact that they show how well 512mb of video ram can improve performance, coupled with the speed increases of the 512GTX, I could see it beating or at least matching SLI GTs at these settings.

I guess we'll have to see how things shake out in another week or so.

And I'm willing to bet that it wont be like that. We'll see about this soon.

I'm gonna take a page outta M0RPH's playbook on this one...

"But there is no evidence!!" "This is all conjecture and a figment of ATI fanboys imagination!"

Why hasnt Rollo said something about this new card? It is very odd that he hasnt objected to anyones claims, esp deadseasquirrel's FPS. Maybe he is sleeping or at work?

Ill wait till it comes out and actually has a large boost in performance over the XT/GTX before I say anything.

When exactly is the release date for the ultra? I thought I saw a thread that said the 7th of November?

That was the original date from the Inq. You see, some people pick and choose what they want to believe from the Inq, depending on which way they lean. Such as the clock speeds of the 7800 512mb. They are reported to be 550/1800. They believe that, but dont want to believe that they wont ship in bulk upon release. They want the cake, and to eat it too.

Which is why I wait for hard proof of anything, and take wha tthe Inq says very lightly.

I agree, but does anyone have any idea when we will see the ultra hit the shelves?
