Let me cut through the fanboism here. I would feel similarly underwhelmed if this was the R520. The 7800 only does 20-30% better than the 6800 Ultra, which makes it an evolutionary rather than revolutionary step. The performance increase is tepid compared to what we have seen with other generational steps in the past.

Had they launched the card at 6800 Ultra prices, it would at least seem a reasonable option for those that otherwise would have bought an Ultra. Unfortunately, the prices on top end cards continue to inflate, and will continue to do so until the customer votes with his closed wallet.

Some of the reviews have done a price/performance analysis, and the 7800 does NOT top the list in that regard. It is a very pricey incremental product that I doubt many will go for, at least not until the R520 shows its colors.

ROFL!!!!1

SH*T... if ATI had done this today everyone would be creaming on their CRT/LCDs so quite acting like it aint a big deal.

And if it isnt a big deal to you, you are in the wrong thread, wrong forum, wrong site.

No, and I have an ATI card myself. I quite franky don't care about a card that costs this much. It is a waste of money..not an investment.

And I still love computers, so I would say this forum and site are just fine for me.

As is your opinion on the matter. You gotta take it as well as give it.

I love playing with new hardware, and I love games, but there ain't no way in hell I'd shell out $600 for a video card. If it drives down the price of the 6800 ultra, or forces ATI to slash prices by 40% to gain market share, then I'll join all of you in saying it's the greatest thing since sliced bread. But untill one of those things happen, it's just another over priced toy.
And before I get flamed, I have no issue with anyone spending their money on one, it's just not something I care enough about to toss a lot of cash at it.
If ya'll really want to get pumped up, you should see my new deck!

I never understood all of this "ATI sucks, NVIDIA rules!" or "NVIDIA sucks, ATI rules" business. Honestly, who really gives a sh:t? Each manufacturer makes cards that perform well in some areas and do not in others, and each have been 'king' at one point during each quarter of the year. Relax; ATI will come up with something and then nVidia will and then ATI will and then...

It's technology, folks.

If you have the $ it does not mean much. If you do not, and feel the need to rip on others because of it.........well, there ya go

Edit: OK, if you own a Dell 24" LCD, or any monitor with resolution larger than 1600 x 1200, then maybe you can justify $600 for a Video card without being a clown...

At the demo last night they said it's quieter than a single 6800U. I'll be able to tell you tomorrow when I install them.

I'm enthusiastic cuz this thing without doubt rocks.

If you can match or beat SLI performance with a single card, make it SINGLE SLOT and available today... with 24 pipes you have a first round knockout.

They were running three UE3 engine games at 12X10 on a huge movie screen last night, they looked sweet.

Im more of an ATI fan than Nvidia but i gotta say that this is a very nice direction the company is going in. Im blown away to see that their new generation card is "probably" quieter, takes less juice and only needs a single fan to run.
I was expecting it to be some power hungry, hot as hell, 3 fan beast taking up 2 slots.
I still wouldn't put down $600 for it but maybe thats cause my lcd can only do max 1280 by 1024 so i dont need it ;p and i cant believe some of the fanboys in here raving about it w/o even waiting to see what ATI is going to bring out.

On a side note ive renewed my interest in Nvidia. When i first heard PS3 was going to use a Nvidia chip i was sad and came to the conlusion the PS3 is just going to melt (taking into consideration how hot the current PS2's can get) with a Nvidia card. Now seeing the 7800gtx and the improvements i cant wait to see how good PS3's gpu will be b.c it'll surpass this one and the ultra version !!

The card is no doubt good. But don't start saying it's gonna pwn ATI when it hasn't been released yet.
It has actually been released and is quite available... Either that, or newegg is shipping me an empty box right now.

Actually, I own a 1680x1050 LCD and before that a 1600x1200 CRT, and Doom3 did not run buttery smooth on either of those with a 6800GT. Certainly playable, but it would get dicey at times. The only way to play D3 at those settings smoothly is with dual 6800GT's, and the 7800GTX is less expensive than dual 6800GT's.

Hmm lets see.

Doom 3
2048 x 1536 4X AA

Nvidia Geforce 7800 GTX: 34.9 FPS (Nvidias Next Generation Card)

Ati Radeon X850 XT PE: 26.3 FPS (Atis Last Generation Card

8.3 FPS Faster at Highest Res, Yep thats a umm blowout..... Considering this is Doom III were talking about I wonder whos blown out. Consideirng those numbers I am really looking forward to Atis next card.

flip forward a few pages and watch the 7800GTX lay down 69.3 FPS in HL2 compared to the X850XTPE's 52.5 at 2048x1536 4xAA, and this is "ATI's game". Make it dual GTX's, and the FPS are actually more than double those of the X850XTPE. Remember that the X850XTPE isn't exactly a budget card either.

Also, this should be:

Nvidia Geforce 7800 GTX: 34.9 FPS (nVidia's Current Generation Card)

Ati Radeon X850 XT PE: 26.3 FPS (ATI's Current Generation Card)

ATI hasn't launched it's R520 GeForce killer 32-pipe card yet. Hell, they can't even get their CrossFire rigs out the door, so let's not call their current enthusiast flagship card a "last" gen card quite yet.

Semi-unrelated question: Do you even need 4x AA (if any) when you're running resolutions like 1600x1200 or 2048x1536?

I use 4xAA with 1680x1050 whenever possible. Higher resolutions also tend to mean larger screens, so even if the resolution is high, the edges can still be jagged. It also depends on the game as well. For example, without AA in FarCry, the edge of the gun was extremely jagged IMO. I imagine that it was the stark contrast between the gun metal grey and the sandy beach, but it was quite noticable.

Competition is a good thing.. and this new Nvidia card is not .. I hope ATI bring out something to match it soon.

Funny thing is over her in Australia this is the current pricing for High end video cards.

7800GTX $850 au

6800 Ultra $850 au
X800XTPE $850 au
X850XTPE $850 au

NOW does that look right to you? these are the average going online price's for these cards at the moment !!!

kinda messed up don?t you think.

needless to say I am very, very impressed with this part.

Cool, quiet, SINGLE SLOT, draws LESS power than a 6800 Ultra and is as fast or faster than 6800Ultra SLI.

Yeah, and its available.. bye bye ATI.

I'm sorry, but NV40 was a blowout round for Nvidia and this is even more of a blowout.

I cant imagine the 32pipe card ready for R520 (if it ever even gets here).

Come up with all the excuses you want to hate on Nvidia and their new card, but this card is AMAZING and quiet to boot!
But all arguments are moot because SLI is available TODAY, and the 7800 is for sale TODAY and is the new King after the Geforce6.

I give the luck of the Irish to ATI.. they need it.

kind of agree actually
