Just buy a X800 CrossFire Edition for $250-ish, and you'll score about ~9k in 3DMark05. So far reports are saying a pair of 7800GTX in SLI will score about ~11.5k. You can decide if it's worth the extra 3DMarks for over double the cost.

My SN25P SFF prevents me from doing this, but maybe at another juncture.

BTW, Love the sig!

And I'm somewhat disappointed to see LeadTek using a reference cooler.

This is usually the case with the first batch of nVidia cards.

Uh, almost everyone's cards get gouged out the gates, but these are probably MSRP, and it's a bit high.

And don't even act like such is an Nvidia-only issue. ATi is just as guilty.

...I meant the ref cooler... Usually the first batch are built straight to nV specs, and they get creative as time goes by.

Ah, point taken

I have a 6600GT, specifically because when I bought it this January to replace my Ti 4400, I was planning on discarding it after 12 months to be replaced by G70/R520, so I didn't want to spend too much dollars. I didn't go high end in the current gen for a reason - I didn't want to pay a premium for performance that would be outdated in a few months.

I'll probably be picking up a 7800GTX around the end of the year, but hey, R520 may surprise us...

eh my X800XT is hardly slaming games in the face @ 1920x1200. Yeah its nice but I would atleast like a little bit of AA which it cannot run at this res.

Good card or bad card we'll find out from Anand tomorrow but damn, congrats to nVidia for the first real launch we've seen in a long time. Last gen's paper launch backlash really must've sunk in, and not a moment too soon.

Yup. Even though I have no interest in the $400+ high-end cards, kudos to them for actually launching with availability. Won't hurt that it should drive down prices on the previous gen cards through the end of the year.

Then you somehow managed to click the link incorrectly.

Try again.
No, they had raised the price up to $649.99 when I clicked on it. Now it's $599.99. Also, they still only support OpenGL 1.5 apparently.

Wow.

I have to admit i fully expected a paper launch, so this impresses me. Unfortunately, the price/performance does not impress me.

I still think the X950 series will be slightly better, so i am gonna wait to see...not to mention that in Canada, they will likely try to sell these for $1000...

Open GL2.0 support is all in the drivers.

PCI-X cards look different (search for high-end SCSI adapters to see for yourself). These PCI-E graphics cards are "fairly" long, though.

I love being right.

That said, I think I'll wait to see what ATi is offering this round. As a person who's only ever used nVidia cards (just a fluke, no brand loyalty here), I'm curious to see how the other half live...

Geforce 4 Ti 4600 was a litte over $300
FX5800, 5900 were around $400
6800 ultras were theoretically $500 MSRP, but gouging was rampant because of the limited supply.
7800GTX is now $600, but with no gouging

This is not a pattern I'm very comfortable with, but considering a modern GPU is more complex than a modern CPU (maybe not in design, but certainly in production) and a graphics card includes RAM, a bunch of stuff for power managment, PCB, etc. I'm not at all surprised by the trend.

No ultra version until ATI has some competition ready. If you believe the rumors going around ATI is having a hell of a time getting all 32 pipelines working on the R520, I'm sure they'll figure it out soon enough, but until then I wouldn't expect to see an ultra version. I don't expect to see the 7800/x900 series show up in AGP at all, certainly not at a price point that makes any sense considering nforce4 motherboards are supposed to become very cheap. Personally I'm feeling very good about my purchase of a 6800GT about a year ago (flashed to ultra and then overclocked a bit past that to 425/1150). I'd much rather pick up an X2 to replace my 3500+ than a 7800 to replace my 6800, not that I could afford either one right now.

Holy crap, power supply. Oh, wait, the power supply isn't powerful enough to run those in SLI, according to spec. Still, 460 MHz / 1300 MHz is nice. Rock on, BFG!

obeseotron has made some disturbing observations about pricing.

The fact is, nVidia & ATi are raking in cash from video card sales.

If you actually believe it's costing them double to make the 7800s over the TIs, i'd like some of whatever it is you're smoking.

The sick thing is how i can see it only continuing, which frustrates me.

If nVidia was the only company making video cards, it'd be another story. It's not though. I know no one will agree with me, but i somewhat think that nVidia & ATi are working together to raise prices gradually. Since they are pretty much the only choices...why not?
It used to be $5000 to buy a good PC system.
Then of course, prices dropped drastically...& now they are going up again...or the high end is anyway.
It seems the gap between the cheap word processing system & the gaming system is becoming massive...& i dislike that
