7800GTX Overheating - 106C under load!!

I just started playing games on my PC again, and I noticed artifacts and screwed up rendering in games like Bioshock. Also 3dmark06 was crashing on my with direct 3d errors. So I installed ntune to check the temperature of my GPU... 76C idle, 106C under load (right after crash)!!!

What could be causing this overheating? BTW I'm running at stock speeds, no overclocking. I have the stock heatsink + fan on my 7800GTX and the fan is spinning. I've already ordered a Zalman GPU fan, I'm just hoping there's nothing wrong with my card.

I would stop running it at those temps until your new cooling system arrives, seriously. 106C is insanely hot, im amazed it can even run at those temps. You will probally do permanent physical damage to your card if you run it for a long time at those temps.

Do you have alot of dust on the card? The dust can act as an insulator, making the fan worthless, and your temps will skyrocket.

Thanks for the suggestion, I will take the card out today and dust it off + check everything out.

Funny thing is the card wasn't overheating at all two years ago... now I check the temp and it's running like an oven!!

I had a similar problem with my 6800GT. I simply removed the faceplate, blew the dust out with a can of compressed air, and my temperatures dropped 20C. If the fan isn't able to push air through the fins due to dust, you will most definitely have heat problems. Furthermore, I suggest you clean your computer case and components thoroughly at least ever two months.
