5 years ago i would have bought one

but now it's too darn loud and not fast enough compared to SSD

i'd rather have a fast SSD for OS/programs and a silent HDD for storage

It is no louder than normal 3.5" 7200RPM performance drives. You're probably thinking of the older Raptors, not the current VelociRaptors. Those Raptors were noisy.

How much does a 500GB 7200RPM HDD cost these days? Probably only $20 less.

Really the best price for a latest gen VelociRaptor, next nearest are nearly $20 higher. I'm tempted to buy a few.

Why would you compare with a silent component? While the drive is louder than a silent SSD, if you have a video card with a fan on it or a CPU fan I bet you would struggle to hear the raptor over them.

Great as a fast storage drive, wish the 1TB version was marked down the same percentage!

Bought one yesterday! And they have a 5 year warranty too!

@klienkenstein

B/C SSDs are pretty pricey and if you want more space~500gb ssd will run you $500. But WD should adjust pricing for the VR. But this was just a steal at $80.

Waste of dinero IMO. Most any 3TB can pounce on the Dinosaurs. In raid0 they get bitchslapped. But hey, it's your scratch and rationale...I suppose.

raid0 implies you need to buy at least 2+ drives, making it cost about the same as the raptor lol. Plus data loss if one drive fails is problematic for some. But I agree, VRs are a dying breed as SSD prices are going down. But until SSDs become completely affordable, they will still be alive.

Wow! They are still making these Dino drives, why? They should be extinct for a reason.

They work very well in RAID0 arrays providing good performance and capacity for things like large virtual machines that you probably don't want on your SSDs. If you short stroke them you can keep performance pretty high (high IOPS/sec).

Okay, let's go with your logic. 6TB Barracuda @ $180 ($0.03/GB) shits on a 1TB Dinodrive @ $160 ($0.16/GB). But hey, no foul, it's your money.

Except, not. The latest gen raptor (which this is) is the fastest available mechanical drive. There is no faster 3TB drive.

Besides, you also get a 5 year warranty on these, and the bonus of not having your data randomly lost due to drive failure 70% of the time like it would be if you used a Seagate branded drive.

All in all this is an amazing deal.
