Check out Guru 3D for some early OCing results....if this is the case....I'll be itching for a set of 7900GT OCed in SLI.....
GeForce 7600 GT 560 MHZ / 607 MHz 1400 MHz / 1600 MHz
GeForce 7900 GT 450 MHZ / 545 MHz 1320 MHZ / 1568 MHz
GeForce 7900 GTX 650 MHZ / 705 MHz 1600 MHZ / 1800 MHz
roughly 100Mhz on the core and roughly 125Mhz on the mem(250 effective) Thats just sick...Imagine if you slapped an Artic cooling or Zalman on that thing... :Q

Ati has way nicer features, avivo and such. Is it not a clear choice to go with the 1900 then? Or are there some benefits to the 7900 over the 1900? thank you
isn't Avivo = Purevideo?
7900 is cooler/ more energy effecient/quieter
1900 has HDR+AA
X1900 also has angle independent AF which even the notirous mouthpiece for nVidia HardOCP recognizes:
We like the Higher Quality AF filtering that the X1900 XTX does though. ATI?s HQ AF really helps with image quality in an outdoor game like BF2 when compared to NVIDIA?s way of doing filtering. There are a lot of angles to the ground textures in BF2 and having the filtering performed in ATI?s superior way can indeed provide a noticeably better visual quality and overall better gaming experience. You can find forum arguments all over the Net about Red Vs. Green when it comes to texture filtering, but this is one situation where ATI?s technology clearly leads in the real-world gaming experience battle.

I agree. Should be able to OC to GTX speed with a 3rd party cooler, total cost should be less than a real gtx..
EDIT: nm.. 256mb vs 512mb.. GTX is still better..

Better being kind of subjective, yes the more memory will help but the fact that you could get similar performance at a lower price is a the key in this.

X1800XT same price as 7900GT
Like you, I could pull up a $599 7900GTX and say "Cheapest 7900GTX in stock @Newegg is $150 more than X1900XT" but I dont prefer twisting arguments.

I'm thinking of picking up 2 x 7900 Gt's and 2 3rd party VGA coolers.
Do you guys think this is a good idea?
It would cost me approximately £120 more then a single 7900 GTX or £140 more then a single X1900 XTX.
But I'm hoping with 3rd party coolers installed I could get 2 x 7900 GTX SLI performance.

Go for it, if you think the cost is justified then do it. If you do make sure to report to us the difference in OCing...I'll be especially interested since I have a $500US tax refund coming and I could easily pony up the extra 100 for the cards plus around 50-60 for a VGA cooler. Then sell my old mobo(maybe get 70-80 bucks for it) and buy the Epox SLI version(which is like 115ish at Newegg)

Crap just noticed something.
Will the 3rd part 7800 coolers even fit the 7900 GT?
Isnt the Gt smaller?
And also, by the looks of the pics, i'd say there were some jumpers on the rear of the board that would get in the way of the 3rd party cooler.
What do you guys think?
Perhaps Nvidia designed it in such a way as to ensure at this current time It couldnt be made in to a 7900 GTX?

$300+ 7900GT/X1800XT

I wonder if XFX will come out with a 7900GT with the GTX cooler? I think they did that with the 7800GT or GTX256?
I really like that Quadro heatpipe cooler.
