Ok guys, I'm this close >< to ordering 2 7900 Gt's.
Just need to confirm a few things.

Firstly, are 2 x 7900 GT's SLI in all cases better performance then a single 7900 GTX?

And if so, which of these 7900 GT's should I go for.

Gigabyte GeForce 7900GT - £223

Asus GeForce 7900 GT - £240

MSI GeForce 7900 GT - £237

I'm leaning towards Gigabyte for obvious reasons.

Get the Gigabyte ones for 223 pounds, then see how they perform with just the stock heatsinks as far as OCing. Then if you feel the need to order some aftermarket HSFs do so.

MSI and ASUS usually bundle their cards with a lot of good stuff. Of course if you don't need or want any of that stuff there is no reason to spend the extra cash. Do all 3 cards have the same clock speed and or coolers?

Yes I belive so.
None of them are extra clocked.

I guess the only difefrence is the bundle, but I doubt theyd give away any software i'd need.

i think firingsquad did try to oc both the gt and gtx

and the gt didn't get very far in terms of ocing around mid 500 for the core

the gtx on the other hand looks like it would max out at around 700 for the core
but the memory ocs like mad (1800+)

Nib- Good luck with the new cards tell us how they do.

Moonboy, check out Guru3D as far as OCing, they managed to OC their 7900GT 95Mhz which is 21% on the core.

Really?

X1800XT same price as 7900GT

Like you, I could pull up a $599 7900GTX and say "Cheapest 7900GTX in stock @Newegg is $150 more than X1900XT" but I dont prefer twisting arguments.

I think that SKU might be dead or a place holer for the refurbished because the have a HIS on there instock same specs and packaging for almost $100 more.
256MB vs 512MB
Oh I missed that, I forgot that they even had that seperation. Did they state in the reviews with 7900gt against the 1k8XT which mem configuration they used.

W00t!!

Just ordered my two 7900 Gt's!!
Told my mates and now theyre all jumping gun too!

Why?
because the same 7900 GT I just bought for £223 each are going for £280 everywhere else in the UK
So £450 for 2 x 7900 GT is a bargain. Unfortunately I havent ordered a 3rd party HSF yet, gonna let others on the net try first before I take the stab.

the way I see it is, even the GT's OC's to around the 500 mark will still get me a lot better performance then my single XTX.

Man i F'in love price wars!
To think the 7800 GTX 512mb was £680 in the UK just 2 months ago! LMAO!!!

ATI increased the z-buffer size so that it would perform better with 1900x1200 monitors. I am not sure where Nvidia is on this. Apparently it was a serious performance issue in the past with ultra-high resolutions.

what a cluster this thread is.

Anyway...

I am soon building a system and am trying to decide between the 7900GTX & X1900XTX. Regardless, I want a 512MB card.

Will the ATI card run ok on a mobo with the nvidia chipset? I am looking at the ASUS A8N32-SLI, which in itself I guess should push me towards the 7900GTX. Any other mobo's that would be a good fit for an x1900xt?

Ati has way nicer features, avivo and such. Is it not a clear choice to go with the 1900 then? Or are there some benefits to the 7900 over the 1900? thank you

isn't Avivo = Purevideo?
7900 is cooler/ more energy effecient/quieter
1900 has HDR+AA

X1900 also has angle independent AF which even the notirous mouthpiece for nVidia HardOCP recognizes:

We like the Higher Quality AF filtering that the X1900 XTX does though. ATI?s HQ AF really helps with image quality in an outdoor game like BF2 when compared to NVIDIA?s way of doing filtering. There are a lot of angles to the ground textures in BF2 and having the filtering performed in ATI?s superior way can indeed provide a noticeably better visual quality and overall better gaming experience. You can find forum arguments all over the Net about Red Vs. Green when it comes to texture filtering, but this is one situation where ATI?s technology clearly leads in the real-world gaming experience battle.

7900 has transparency AA.
angle independent AF helps in quality but with high res on + high AA, its really not a big difference. I agree it does help though.

Do you play at high res???
At 1920x1200, I can easily tell between various levels of AA and standard vs HQ AF. If you're sensitive to IQ, you can tell quickly.

Decisions, Decisions...

For 1920x1200:

1. 2 7900GTs for SLI
2. X1900XT/XTX
3. 7900GTX

Any thoughts?

Wow for my needs these cards are a wash. No clear winner, at least until ati does something about the heat and power thing. I think maybe some nice price wars on the way and likely some better flame wars until this one is settled. Nvidia produced a nice upgrade in their line (I don't count the 7800gtx, as it really wasn't available at a competitive price).
