Hi guys

Any ideas why the stock fan on my 7900gt won't quiet down once it gets into windows?

I have the 84.21 forceware drivers installed.

The fan stays full throtle even after being in windows for quite some time.

Any ideas??

Thanks

Well I just got it today, so every since I installed it.

It's weird because my 7800gt throtled down the speed when I got into windows, I figures the 7900gt would be no different

You may have a card with the heatsink improperly installed and not making good contact with the core. Maybe try uninstalling your video drivers and reinstalling them. If you had an ATI card in there before you may want to use a driver cleaner to remove all remnants of old video drivers before installing the new drivers. If this doesn't work it may be time for a RMA.

Edit- nevermind on the ATI card-I see the 7800GT as prvious card.

AFAIK it should throttle down. Try using something like Riva Tuner to control the fan speed.

I tried using rivatuner, but it says it can't recognize the drivers.

I'm using the 84.21 drivers directly from nvidia.com....anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

I wound up replacing the cooler on my 7900GT DieselPUmp. It was too loud IMHO. Perhaps it is throttling down and is just too noisy for you also.

VF700 CU worked well for me, but if I had the extra $$$ I'd have gone for the VF900 CU.

The vf900 is definately what Im thinking of getting.

But it's not out for purchase yet in canada, at least I can't find it.

NCIX.com has it for pre-order only.

I guess I'll deal with this annoying fan for now.

Thanks for the help

The default setting for fan speed was 43% for all three settings (2D, low power 3D, and performance 3D) for my 7800GT. This means it would stay at 43% all the time. Even though RivaTuner doesn't recognize those drivers, it should let control fan speed, maybe just overclocking will not work well. I used RivaTuner with 84.20 and it gave me some message but I ignored it and it works fine for fan speed.

Sigh, these people don't know what they are talking about. The default setting for fan speed was 43% for all three settings (2D, low power 3D, and performance 3D) for my 7800GT. This means it would stay at 43% all the time. I used RivaTuner to reduce it, but I don't know if it will recognize a 7900GT.
So, you don't even have a 7900GT and we don't know what we're talking about?

The cooler is loud, and when I replaced it, the noise went away. What part of that am I missing something on?

This is probably the same problem that a lot of the 7800 GTs had with the the fan not throttling down after entering windows (my card had this problem as well). It's supposed to be a driver related issue and the only real solution I know of is to restart your computer several times and it should throttle down.

If it was driver related wouldn't NVidia driver engineers have fixed it a few driver revs. ago? If it is a driver problem that they can't or won't fix, then I'm pretty glad I ditched that stock POS cooler and got the Zalman. Even at full speed it's nearly inaudible.

I reread his post and fixed what I said. Well regardless, the point was that it's not even set to throttle down automatically if you do not use RivaTuner. When I said you guys don't know what youre talking about, I was referring to the guy who suggested the cooler was not installed properly.

They do, but you'll have to cut off a part of the cooler so that you can put in the case . . .

I also have a 7900GT (BFG) that will not throttle down. It just constantly runs at the same (full?) speed. It is rather loud.

If this place only served beer, I'd have a second home...

Did nVidia keep the lid on tight regarding the 7900GT? Seems an Arctic Cooling or Zalman solution would have been ready to go otherwise. Crappy reference cooling shipping on thousands of 7900GTs is a travesty.

I don't even have my 7900GT yet, and here I am picking out a cooler that's not even available. The Zalman VF900 sure looks pretty.

If Arctic Cooling had one of those new X coolers to fit the 7900GT, would you buy it instead? Is DHES going away?

Same here. I hope that RivaTuner is updated soon so that I can turn it down. Adding another cooler is not an option in an SFF.

The drivers are reporting an idle temp of 44C, which doesn't seem all that high.

Well I certainly don't know everything- just throwing out some possibilities on what I thought might be causing a video card's fan to run at full tilt. A fan that is not making correct contact with the core might make that core a lot hotter than usual- and maybe the card might try to cool itself by running the fan at full speed. My other guess was a driver problem which may not be it either but it's a pretty easy thing to check by a reinstall.

A closed mind eventually dries up.

Whatever you say man, you didn't even tell him to check what the default fan speeds are with Riva before you suggest the most remote possibility. If it wasn't installed properly somehow, I'm sure his card would simply overheat and shut off the computer.

The heatsinks properly installed on the card, the temp is not the prob, it's idling at 40 degrees.

Just so damn loud...lol

So there you go- he checked his temps and eliminated the most remote possibility in a matter of 5 seconds. Was my next sentence after that about the drivers the 2nd most remote possibility? Anyway, instead of throwing a general comment about "nobody in here knows what they are talking about"- why don't you simply try to help the OP with your own knowledge?
