7900GT ON A 380W psu

Antec Sonata with stock 380PSU

Thinking about uping to the wonderfully overclockable 7900gt. I plan on volt modding it and shooting for a core clock over 700mhz.

Think I'll be safe on this PSU?

Looking on Newegg, I found 2 Antec PSUs, 350W, and 400W, both SmartPower2.0, which are probably similar to the unit you have in your Sonata (maybe a bit better). Both have dual +12V rails, but they add up to only 25 Amps, so I'm thinking that may be a little low to run all of your stuff. I would spend another $40 or $50 and upgrade to a 400 or 450W Fortron AX series PSU, as those units have 34 and 36 Amps on the +12V rails, respectively.

BTW I checked PSU calculator and found that you need around 360W for your PSU if you don't have any additional PCI cards, LED fans, etc. Better to play it safe than to have problems later on, especially considering it's only 40-50 dollars.

Yeah, you might be getting a bit too ambitious with that 380 PSU

Not sure whether you have 7800 GT or 7900 GT (your topic says 79, but text says 78...), but I had a 6800 Ultra (pure power hog) on a generic Raidmax 420 watt PSU. It ran alright for about 2 months, then I started OCing my processor, and it crapped out. Then I bought a 500 watt Antec, and it ran great. My buddy tried my ultra on his 350 watt Antec, and it seemed to go alright. You should be okay with a 380, as the 78/79 requires a lot less power than a 6800 Ultra (AGP). If anyone cares to chime in who has the card, please do so!

The 7900GTX has similar power requirements to a 7800GT so if you voltmod the 7900GT you should end up with power requirements similar to the 7800GT (which you run already). You should be fine with the 380W Antec PSU.

You'll be fine. I have an eVGA 7900GT CO Superclocked in my Shuttle XPC which has a 300W PSU.

Wow, thx all for your replies. I shall look into the upgrade some more. I tend to go with the theory that my current 7800gt should be similar to a vmod 7900gt.

PSU calculater huh, time to google that one.

PSU calculators may tell you that even your stock 7800 gt couldn't run .. so keep a pinch of salt with you. How much difference in Ws does the vmod make in 7900?

My 7900gt worked fine on a 350watt psu(17amp rail).
