HI, I know there are numerous threads about these two cards but none them seem to answer my specific situation. First off i game on a 17 inch crt @ 12x10 and don't care for AA/AF because i can't tell the difference. I don't play oblivion but i play alot of FPS and plan on playing quake wars/prey. I am overclockign either way I go but will NOT do the volt mod. The cheapest x1800xt for me can be had for $290 and $340 for a 7900gt, both after taxes. WHat would you guys suggest me to do, I want a card to last me till DX10. THanks

quake wars and prey are OpenGL which is single handedly Nvidia's terrain. No contest there.

However, you not being able to tell the difference between AF and AA is frightning...

Here are some examples:

No AA:

With AA:

2x AF:

16x AF:

I used the tweakguides AA and AF guide:

get a x1800xt and start using AA lol but if you REALLY insist in playing without AA then 7900 hands down, since no AA benchs are owned by nvidia

You are wrong (the people who say X1800XT is faster). A factory OC'd 7900GT@ 520+core and 1500+memory would kill any X1800XT, and they are very cheap. They perform as a 7800GTX 512, making it a good amount faster than the X1800XT.

A 7900GT performs as a 7800GTX 256MB, not 512MB. Think before you speak.

7800GTX= 24 pipes 430/1200
7800GTX 512= 24 pipe 550/1700
7900GT (factory OC'd)= 24 pipes from 520+/1500+ (XFX 7900GT XT= 550/1630==7800GTX 512)

Read and then tell me....

Oh! Forgot it.... ¿think before you speak?...

7900GT also = 256MB RAM, are you on drugs?

Read the frigging benchmarks, 7900GT = 7800GTX 256MB, not 512MB.

7800GTX 512MB > 7800GTX 256MB = 7900GT = X1800XT.

Morons.

You moron, 256mb ram makes no difference. Are you a newbie?? You man are soooo new that can't have a look at the specs and tell??. You want benches? right, here we go...
Not only that, I will show you against a factory OC'd 7800GTX 512:

Who is a moron now? Ok, I see your rig, maybe a fanboy...

uh, how are those benches in any way relevant? they are comparing the 7900 product line with an 1800XL and the OP asked about the 1800XT, right?

BTW, I'd say go for whatever is cheaper between the two for now. Also, ATI is having a $50off ATI promo (at NewEgg) right now so why not spring for a 1900XT if you have 7900GT dollars?

They are relevant since they show it performs as a 7800GTX 512. Now you can see all the 7800GTX 512 reviews and have a comparison point with X1800XT and factory Oc'd 7900GTs.

if it performs like GTX512 then its gonna win against x1800xt because 7800GTX512 already wins against x1800xt

A 7800GTX 512MB is faster than a 7800GTX 256MB, moron, and I didn't say it was because of the extra VRAM either. The X1800XTs are as fast as the 256MB model, so are the 7900GTs, but the 512MB GTX model pulls ahead in pretty much all benchmarks.

Maybe you should actually read some benchmarks for once, then you would know that the hell you are talking about before making yourself look foolish.

Very true, but unfortunately it doesn't. The 7900GT is equal in performance to a 7800GTX 256MB, the same way an X1800XT is.

Some Nvidia fan boys like to pretend that the 7900GT is equal in performance to a 7800GTX 512MB (even the factory OC'ed ones are not), but benchmarks pretty much everywhere say otherwise.

I think you have a new problem now, you are unable to read... right what else can we say. I have provided benches that confirm what I'm saying. I'm refering to 7900GTs at 520+/1500+ speeds and you are refering to 450/1200 ones like performing the same. You've got a huge problem man...

My X1800XT overclocks to 690/800, what's your point? It'd go a shed-load higher too, if I wasn't using Overdrive (which limits the maximum clocks), and this is on stock cooling. I've noticed that Nvidia fan boys like to pretend ATi cards don't overclock, I see nothing different in this thread.

The fact is that the 7800GTX 512MB performs a good deal better than the 7800GTX 256MB, and my evidence is here for you to see, a nice article on exactly why the 512MB model was more of a monster, and it's not just because of the doubled memory capacity like I said. You are exaggerating the speed of the 7900GT, and it's damn ugly.

The 7900GT is on par with a 7800GTX 256MB. I think you should get over your fanboyism and accept it before you continue to make yourself look foolish. Add to the mix the fact that the X1800XT can do antialiasing and higher resolutions better than a 7900GT, and you realise that your cheerleading of the 7900GT is totally unfounded. A 7900GT is pointless at current prices unless you plan to volt-mod it, in which case you may (but not guaranteed) get it up to 7900GTX speeds.

Addition: 7900GT vs. 7800GTX 256MB benchmarks here.

You can buy factory Oc'd 7900GTs everywhere!!! I can't see your point, it's not like I'm telling the guy to OC, YOU CAN BUY THEM WITH FULL GUARANTEE AND OC'D@ GTX 512 LEVELS!!!!

And I'm a fanboy???? You are a huge newbie....

I know you're saying that you can buy 7900GTs with factory overclocks, but your thick head can't understand that even overclocked they don't perform on the level of the GTX 512MB. You also seem to be forgetting that GTX 512MBs overclock too, so do X1800XT's, and this is because you are an Nvidia fan boy, or at least a 7900GT fan boy, and debating this with you is like talking to a wall -- of ignorance.

By the way; Typing in all capitals and saying "newbie" doesn't mean that what you are saying is correct. Try backing it up with links to benchmarks and logical thinking, the way I have many times in this thread, if you want to back up your idiotic statements.

I'd also like to add that the X1800XT can do HDR+AA, the 7900GT cannot. The X1800XT, at least where I live, is also quite a fair bit cheaper than the 7900GT. It's a simply logical choice.

You can also OC factory OC'd cards :S It does perform at GTX 512mb levels, just look at the benches I posted!! I can't believe you are such stupid. I like X1800XT a lot, I almost bought one a week ago, don't tell me I'm a fanboy because I'm not. I'm using arguments and benches and you are using nothing but stock crappy 7900GTs...
