7900GT stuttering / freezing issues low fps

It sounds like there might be stuttering/freezing issues with the latest batch of 7900 cards. I bought a new XFX 7900GT (550 core model), and my framerates hover around 70-80fps (1680x1050 resolution, 4x AA, 4x Anis., all settings Very High in FarCry for instance), then drop to 14 (for a fraction of a second) about every 5 seconds. It?s enough to drive me absolutely insane. If I turn off AA, Anis, and drop all the FC settings to Low?same thing happens (crap...)

GPU core doesn?t go above 45C full load (water cooled in a cold room), and ram above 55C full load (120mm blowhole fan right over the card). Tried both the newest and Beta drivers.

Power supply is a PC Power and Cooling 510 SLI.

I was previously running a x800xl and it ran great (settings high or low). Used a number of cleaner utilities to remove the old drivers so I don't suspect those.

What do you think? I?m tempted to reformat, but I don?t think it will do anything.

That's a good PSU and the 7900GT doesn't consume much power so that's not the problem. Never had this happen with Farcry. I dunno, if you're not overclocking then it may be RMA time.

Does this happen with other games?

Yes, happens with other games.

It has been completely baffled, lol.

I'm going to reformat now (I use this system only to play FarCry). Will post the results.

dude, this is crazy, call the tech support and rma it,
since it happens with other games its most probably not a software issue.

reformatting will just take more time ( backup and install), up 2 u though.....

Even though your PSU is good, it may be on the fritz. Sounds like it may be spiking. Just put that card in a friends computer and see if the problem carries over, if not then the likely culprit is the PSU unless the reformat works.

if you were running a radeon card before,.. when you installed the new card did you uninstal the driver,.. AND then boot into safe mode and run driver cleaner to rid windows of leftover catalyst junk? (same from geforce to radeon,.leftover geforce junk that interferes with performance,..sometimes in drastic cases)

I just finished reformatting and installed only the Nvidia drivers + WinXP/updates.

Running RTHDRIBL the problem seems to be gone...I will update this evening.

Have you tried with fast writes off? Some chipsets have this behavior with fast writes on, it may not apply since it's pci express though.

Reformat didn't help.

I've pulled the card out and requested an RMA, something ain't right...
