I am planning to upgrade my x800GTO card to 7900GT or x1800xt, even x1900xt. However my psu is only 350wt. it is a dell machine. I don't want to do some metal cutting for the PSU upgrade.
Anyone can tell me which card in this range consumes less power? Although my machine does not have many accessaries (2SATA, 2CD, 1PCI card +video card), I do want to choose a less power consume card.

Thanks

the 7900gt by far.

the only ati card that is pretty low power is the x1800xl (its like 55 watts) and the x1800gto. the power usage of the new 90nm chips increases dramatically with more clock speed (very prescott like) so 7900gtx and x1800/1900xt cards use much much more power than their lower clocked ones.

The 7900GT would be your best choice for lowest power consumption.

Get this Antec 550W TruePower II PSU

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102698
and get this X1800XT 256MB

Total:$383 with Fedex Express Saver Shipping, which you can afford if you're considering an X1900XT.

Is your dell case an ATX or mini-ATX case? If ATX, then I don't think that you'd have to do any metal cutting to install this PSU. And I don't think 350W would be sufficient for even a 7900GT, but I could be wrong.

I have a 7900GT and a dual core Opty running on a Tagan 330w PSU. :Q

All runs ok and cpu and video card are both overclocked.

The X1800XT is a faster card no doubt, but in this case i'd recommend the 7900GT.

You should be fine running a 7900GT. Pretty much any high quality PSU even if low wattage should be fine. look at folks with small SFF cases with 250 watts running high end systems.
