SupernanCK:

I got the chip from a local shop called PC Pointers. I went in and saw this 5/5 Malay, so I bought it before the owner could put it in a system. It runs at 16x160 so far with stock cooler and 1.5V. Now all I need is some Samsung PC2700 memory and an Alpha HSF. With these I think I would be able to be stable at 2.8GHz with around 1.7V.

That is a insane oc.
I have gotten my 1.6a up to 2.35 ghz @1.6volts. I have a msi 645 board and max out on voltage at 1.600 volts. I was going to wire wrap the 4 pins on the cpu for more voltage but I wonder if its a waste of time. I've seen people get past 2.5ghz on 1.6 volts. I know my memories good but the cpu and mobo is another story. Another 50 to 250 mhz is no real big deal but I'd like to squeeze as much out of my system as safely possible. System is used daily and air cooled(next system will be silent water set up). Anyone getting really good results with a similiar set up to mine?

Alright, I read a couple articles on this 1.6A madness. One said that newer chips will be harder to OC. However, reading up on these forums, ya'll say that newer chips will clock better. Just confused and curious as to which one will work better. Btw, which mobo seems to be more popular for the P4 (I just went through a month of heavy KT333 mobo for XP research and now I find that P41.6a is a killer).

I know I don't have a choice, but are newer chips more stable than older ones? Btw, I'm probably going to get a GigaByte GA-8IRXP instead of an Asus P4S333. It seems like the GigaByte has more options for overclocking but most people prefer the Asus board. Why is that? Anyway, here's my system's preliminary specs, tell me what ya'll think.

Motherboard: GigaByte GA-8IRXP i845D
Processor: Pentium4 1.6A w/ ThermalTake Volcano 7+
Memory: Corsair XMS PC2700 512mb DDR
Case: Antec SX1040B Full Tower Case
Hard Drive: Maxtor 80gb 7200RPM ATA133
Video Card: VisionTek Xtasy Ti4400 or LeadTek's Ti4400
Sound Card: SB Audigy

actually the P4B533 is a much better board than the P4B266 - check my other thread.
Asus boards have a great personality to them and they overclock like crazy, and easily

Thugsrook and everyone,

ordered my stuff today! WOO-HOO!

I ordered the P4B533-E (I network with friends alot). That was the hardest decison for my new rig. I didn't like the on-board video idea (my opinion on that, which is NOT based on fact, is that the video robs the board of real estate which HAS to hinder SOMETHING) of the 845G, and Thugs has shown what can be done with the 845E. One other factor: mobos aren't really that expensive, I can always change it later. I didn't really want anything else.

I ordered the 1.6A (hope I get a good one!) and Corsair PC3200 cas 2 memory, I wanted the Samsung 2700, but the places I order from don't carry it (I can't order from newegg). I just hope this stuff will perform well, I'd like to acheive the same results that you folks have.

For anyone that cares, I also ordered a Plextor 40x/12x/40x, two WD 800JB's and a Promise Fasttrak 100 TX2, a Leadtek Ti4400, and a Pioneer DVD-106S. All this will go into an Antec plus 1080B case. Haven't ordered any cool-guy cooling stuff yet, I want to see what I can get out of this stock, then make it faster bit by bit.

Anyway, thanks alot to everyone, these forums have been a fantastic source of info, can't wait to post some results!

Thugs,
I just wanted to know what kind of PSU you have running your ubersystem and have you noticed any instability yet? Thanks

BTW: Just ordered Asus P4B533, P4 1.6A, 512MB Samsung PC2700, and Alpha 8942 after all the research and this thread.

its an enermax 550W PSU.

both boards (p4b266 & p4b533) have been 100% stable and are very similar.
the p4b533 does offer alot more options for 166+fsb overclocking tho.

i thought we went over this already

turbo1 = 70AGP/35PCI
turbo2 = 80AGP/40PCI

some cards may have problems booting in turbo2 mode.

So is there any way to really overclock this setup with full USB usage via the onboard USB ports? I have the 1.6a and P4B266-c, but overclocking does not like me unless I disconnect my Intellimouse Explorer cordless. Am I doing something wrong? I did see one post where someone had everything filled, is there a setting I should check?

Thanks.

Yeah, I read the thread & saw you post a few times "It's disabled cause I don't use it". I was hoping someone out there does & got it working.

Thanks thugs
