Hi

My bro is running:
Athlon 64 3000+ (939)
2gb Corsair value ram
Antec Smart power 2.0 450watt PSP
and a BFG 7950gt OC (256mb)

And in battlefield 2142 with settings:
1024 x 768
settings max
Dynamic light off
AA off
AF off

He is only getting 15-25 fps

We both feel that that is kind of low for that graphics card.
He is running the latest Nvidia Drivers
and we were wondering if ya'll think its a software or hardware problem?

Any suggestions would help. Thanks
I can post more info if you need it, just ask.

Hmmm....

That is low for that card with that system. I get on average 30 to 40 frames/sec with my system, and the only difference is I play with a resolution of 800 x 600 and with dynamic lighting on.

I would believe it is software, in that its probably most likely the drivers or it could be with BF2142 itself.

Have you tried an older driver or third party driver for that 7950GT OC? It is also wise to get delete the previous driver before installing a new driver as that can create issues. Some other people have had problems with the nVidia drivers and BF2142 too from what I've gleaned at the BF2142 forums but those are threads back in march of this year and then some last year after a BF2142 update.

Both of you are running very low frames and it's got nothing to do with being CPU bound. I ran a 7800 GT / Opteron 144 @ 2.0 ghz and could easily do 16x12 pretty comfortably in BF2 with most options on. BF2142 uses the same engine and is not much more taxing. First thing to do is check whether your 3DMark 06 scores or some other test (FEAR, CoH demo) are in line with other systems of your caliber (search reviews online, or in case of 3DMark, their database).

Make sure the game is updated and current mobo chipset drivers and video card drivers are loaded.

Also due to the conspicuous absence of a DSP sound card make sure to configure audio for software and may as well disable EAX too.

k this is what ive tried so far.

I installed his graphics card the (7950gt) into my computer which is a Athlon x2 3600, and in my comp his card gets >50fps on max and 2x AA on.
So its not the graphics card.

So i think its either his CPU, Mobo, or software.
I disabled EAX and the sound is set to software>medium settings.

We've flashed his bios and his mobo has the latest drivers.
He even reformatted (btw we are running vista home premium)

Anything else we could try that doesn't require purchasing anything?
Later we will try putting my x1950xt into his comp and see if its limited as well.

What's the CPU score in 3dmark06? Almost certainly it's his processor. Overclock that thing or replace it with a faster 939. The 3000+ is the slowest 939 processor you can get.

Better yet, get a core 2 duo combo that can use DDR.

There is no game, except Supreme Commander, that runs THAT slow on any Athlon 64.

Even the P4 scores 55 fps here

Well, I certainly wouldn't say there is no game except Supreme Commander that runs slow on any A64, but those benches show that it should be able to run it fine.

Something is wrong with the OS/CPU/Motherboard, because at that res, you're only going to be CPU limited. In device manager do you have anything showing with a yellow ?.

Alright, there is one other game that I can think of that runs dog-slow on a low end A64: Lost Planet, inside the Caves.
