Hey! I normally never post but I frequently read the forums here. So first off hello

I currently have a sapphire 7950 oc to 1100mhz, and I'm looking to upgrade. Now I have a 4k samsung 590d monitor and I usually only play mmo games or blizzard game with some bf4 and crysis here and there.

Now I can get another 7950 and crossfire them or I can save up and grab a r9 390x.

The 7950 is 150 used versus r9 390x which is 530 canadian. Fury x, 980 ti are both reaching 900 bucks before taxes which is insane.

Just like to see what you guys recommend.

Also my psu is a silverstone strider 1000watt

I would grab a 290 or a 290X on sale and OC if possible! Since the 7950 doesn't use XDMA crossfire, I feel it's not really worth getting another. How much are 970s for you, as that may be another option.

Personally, I'm holding on to my 7950 to see if the Fury nano impresses, and if not, I'll be waiting for the node shrink next year before getting a new GPU. Tahiti is hanging on surprisingly well, and especially so if you can get your core clock a bit higher than 1100Mhz.

If 7950s are going for $150 used, sell it, and get two used r9 290s for $200 each. That's what they're going for on the fs/t forum here. As low as $165 for reference cooled ones if you want to aftermarket AIO cool it.

970s here are going for 400 to 450, and there is no more 290s left otherwise I would got one! I buy from Canadacomputers.com since it's right down the street from me. I could also wait and see what the air cooled fury is like too. Wished we had US pricing. So expensive in Canada.

Those Canadian prices never fail to surprise me! Judging by those prices, another 7950 might be a good stopgap if you want to upgrade pretty soon, but I don't think I would count on having it past the next gpu cycle. Especially with the terrible crossfire support you may get in games. Upgrade wise, I think an OC'd 970 would be better than a 390X, but they're both great cards and should be nearly identical. Anyway just my two cents!

You could wait for the Fury Nano. Thats what I am most likely going to go for.

Whats the used market like Canada wise? r9 290 after market cards hover around the 200$ used range, which make them an incredible value. See if you can find one around there!

Sell the HD 7950 and get a R9 390. Your HD 7950 at 1100 Mhz is on par with a R9 280X. R9 390 is roughly 40% faster than R9 280X. You also get lots of VRAM to be ready for future games if they need more.

R9 390 is roughly 7% slower than R9 390X at stock. At the same clocks the gap is less than 5%. price perf much better than R9 390X. Good performer at 4k. Easily beats GTX 970 at that resolution.

I recommend the Nitro as the cooler is one of the best. keeps the GPU cool and noise is low.

NCIX has quite a few...
CLUB3D Radeon R9 290 Royalking 975MHZ 4GB $339 CDN

Gigabyte Radeon R9 290 Windforce 4GB $369 CDN AR

And a Powercolor Radeon R9 290X 975MHZ 4GB for $369 CDN AR

At the hoser egg, eh: XFX Double D 290 4GB $354.99 CDN AR

For those watching in the home of the global currency, this in the range of $280(ish) USD.

But...for just a can full more of Canadian Tire dollars... XFX Radeon R9 390 8GB for $419 CDN

Hmmm that's not bad at all !!. Now can these 290s be clocked up a bit ?? And will the 4GB vs 8gb be that much of a difference? And last questions which brand is the best I have had gigabyte and sapphire but never had powercolor or CLUB3D before.

I'm in the same boat as you.

I have the money to buy 980 ti at this point (Fury X is not available here yet) but considering that i have only a 1080p@60hz display, i think a lot of the card potential would be wasted.

What do you guys would do? I plan to ugprade my display in some time to 1440p but i don't know if that's enough to justify a buy like that.

If the plan to upgrade the monitor is more than a year away then get a R9 390 now and when the first 16/14nm FINFET GPUs launch get yourself a powerful GPU (sell the R9 390 and use the money towards the new card) and upgrade to a 1440p monitor.

I think Pascal GP204 might be a very powerful and power efficient card. FINFET, HBM2, new arch. Now thats worth waiting for.

I have 2 x 7970s in eyefinity (3x1080p) and they run pretty well. I see no compelling reason to upgrade. 4k is a big leap over eyefinity though.

Thanks for the input. I've ordered the R9 390 from Sapphire and will wait for the next GPUs in 2016.
