And I think the answer will be yes.

Solid YES! I am not fan of any brand, BTW.

The thing is that the 7950GT doesn't even really compete with the the X1950XTX because the 7900GTX will still be faster. So, it's kind of a dumb question to begin with. I think NV's idea here is to release a good replacement to the extremely popular 7900GT just to deflate the excitement surrounding the launch of the X19050XTX. Dual 7950GT's would make a really nice SLI set though... I wonder if it will get the dinky 7900GT cooler, the nice dual slot GTX cooler, or something else...

According to this page it has a similar cooler to the 7900GT.

Not suprising. If EVGA can clock the cards to 550 mhz with the flimsy cooler, then anyone can.

So yeah, this card really isn't anything new, but I bet that it will serve well to deflate the X1950XTX launch a bit.

It would have been nice if they had at least given it a slightly larger cooler to enable the use of a larger, thus slower spinning, fan... :|

For $300, it would be nice not to have to void the warranty and slap an aftermarket cooler on there to provide good cooling and good sound characteristics.

Well if you get eVGA then that won't be a problem . . .

Putting a different cooler on it also bumps up the price.

did any manufacturer make a 7900GT with a quiet temperature sensing fan?

i ask because i'd like to put a 7950GT in a HTPC, but not if it has noisy cooling.............

if yes, is some enterprising manufacturer likely to do the same with the 7950GT?

?

My 7900GT n584 model eVGA's fan is nearly silent except when gaming, which is when it cranks up a bit. It's the quietest stock single-slot cooling solution I've heard.

Exactly. And usually coolers aren't cheap for the first year or so if they use a different enough card layout to warrant a new cooler (AC). Zalmans are nice, but I prefer the AC line.

If I wanted to spend $340 for a $300 card, I would probably completely skip the 7900GT's and snag a 1900XT.

Here are two overclocked 7900GT with premium/quiet coolers :

Gigabyte GV-NX79T256DP-RH with Zalman cooler

MSI NX7900GT-VT2D256E-HD with MSI cooler

Gigabyte is dual slot while MSI is single slot

I would like to get one of these two, but I am unsure about the ability of the 350 Watt Antec P/S in my system to drive it.

15A on +12V and 10A on -12V? Is it the same as 22 watts on 12V rail?

So, for someone like me considering getting a 7600GT soon for $150 after rebate, what do you think I should do? Should I wait for the 7900GS to be released?

At $199 "e-tail" for the 7900GS, what do you think the "real" price will be, and when?

Also, how much lower do you think the 7600GT will be priced after this card is released and after rebate(s)?

Finally, what's up with this 80nm refresh I'm hearing about for the 7600GT/GS? Are they 90nm now or what?

So many questions, but I'd appreciate answers.

A 20 pipe 7900 gs is going to well outperform a 12 pipe 7600 gt. The card is as good or better than the 7800 gt.

They're going to cut the price on the 7600 gt I believe, to $130, but I haven't heard anything about a refresh.

There's also an x1650xt due out in October, 24 pixel shaders, 600 core/700 memory, but frankly I don't much trust ATI in the midrange market.

If you want a new card, for a game you're currently playing, buy one and don't look back. You can always play the waiting game. I'd grab this.

My humble take on it:

Except at the very low-end and top-end, performance and price of graphics cards tend to be about linearly correlated.

From specs, 7900GS should have about the same performance as 7800 GT. And, from benchmarks, the 7600GT has about 80% of the performance of the 7800 GT

So MSRP of the 7600GT should drop to about $160 (currently 199$). The 7600GS has 65% of the 7600GT's performance and MSRP should then drop to just above $100.

One can try to rule-of-thumb future actual prices by looking at today's discounts on e-tail sites vs, for example, MSRP on EVGA's web site

7600GT/GS are currently on 90nm process. We are still waiting for the confirmation of a 80nm refresh or of new versions of these cards. NVidia might possibly refresh its midrange when ATI comes out with its new X1650 line. Let's not forget there are 16 pipelines in the G73 (7600) core, with currently only 12 being enabled in the 7600 GT/GS.

Man, September 5th through 16th is going to be a great 10-day period, tons of product releases (and not just the 7950GT).

No. The GX2 is a dual-PCB sandwich card. The 7950GT will be a nice, single, card... overclocker's delight i think It'll be between this and the 1950XTX on the highend.

I would say the Geforce 7900 GS is aout 10-15% faster then the 7800 GT due to the higher memory and core clockspeeds, putting it between the 7800 GT and 7800 GTX.

So the 7600 GT should offer 75% performance or so of the 7900 GS, so it should be 149US MSRP, which makes sense as that is 1 of the usually price brackets utilizied.

7600 GS should fall to 119US, the value goes down as you reach the low end, the 7300 GT should move down to 99US I believe. The price/performance curve is best around the 7600 GT - 7950 GT levels, or the X1650 XT to X1900 XT 256MB levels.
