7950GX2 problems with World of Warcraft

I already posted this on the eVGA boards, but I know AT video gets more traffic. So I'm seeing if anyone has any insight into these two issues:

1) Sometimes when I load WoW, my mouse cursor flickers. The game works fine, but the mouse pointer flickers like a strobe light and it kinda drives me crazy. I can usually remedy the issue by rebooting and reloading WoW again. Odd issue, but workable.

2) Frequently when exiting WoW to the desktop, the mouse will be extremely unresponsive for about a minute, and then the machine will completely lookup. No BSOD, just a hard lockup with no response to any input.

When I get into WoW without a flickery cursor, it runs flawlessly and looks great at either 16xAA/16xAF or 8xSAA/16xAF (as WoW should on a GX2) for hours, so I'm quite certain that I don't have any issue with my PSU not being able to feed the card. Even after it running great though, I will often have it lookup my rig as described above when I exit to the desktop.

A few details:
I'm using the beta Forceware 91.33 (might try 91.31 this evening), and problems persist with both motherboard BIOS versions 1101 and 1203.

Anyone else experience anything like this with a any 7-series cards? I haven't ever seen anything like this before. Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions or if this is a "known" driver issue...

I thought you said you sold your 7950GX2?

I know it doesn't answer your question

The 91.31 latest from Nvidia.

i haven't experienced any issues with them so far in the games that I play.

I'll give the 91.31's a shot, I see that they made them WHQL since my last GX2. Maybe the beta's aren't release for a reason...

Haven't had any other issues with any other games. WoW is a sticking point for me though. I might overlook this issue with another game, but WoW is my standby game that I play pretty much regularly when there isn't a new FPS that I'm into. Most of the FPS titles last about a month for me, but I've been playing WoW for almost a year now. Plus, I will pop in and out of WoW when doing other things, so I really can't have it bringing my rig down on exit.

Surprisingly little considering what I own. I do sell my used cards...
I've actually sold a used card on Ebay for only a few dollars less than what the card was going for new at newegg. You guys only see one half of the transactions that take place, and not the other. I don't ever sell stuff on AT forums becasue you guys tend to buy stuff for much less than the average person (because you are generally more knowledgable). Just because I never post in FS/FT doesn't mean I don't know what's going on in there.

I appreciate the interest in my finances, but what I really need is some advice with my tech issue.

Is your framerate in WoW usualy in the triple digits? (Hit Control R to find out) What kind of performance do you get in big cities like Iron Forge?

Just curious.

As far as I can tell, WoW is capped at 60FPS. The GX2 hovers in the mid 30's with 16xAA, and 40's to 60 with 8xAA. At least that's what I got with the 91.31's... The 91.33's "felt" smoother, but I didn't actually check the fps when I had those installed.

I didn't really mess with that a whole lot because my problem persists even with the 91.31's... I think I'm going to take this card back to the store, as it appears to be borked in some fashion.

Wow is not capped at 60FPS. I forget what to change, but I know its at least 100 and may be even unlockable. may have to do with refreashrate or something else. I havent played in a while so I dont know, ask on the forums.

Also teh newer drivers are generally more buggy for alot of people i know. Im running 84.21 and they fixed a similer problem you discrive while I tried to play H.264 videos. Its most probably a driver issue as wow cannot itself do somthing like that. Its your drivers locking your card up though bad I/O.

d'oh! didn't even think about v-sync... I pretty much always run with v-sync enabled (on a 60Hz LCD)...

GX2 has been returned. They didn't have another one in stock, so they gave me a refund.

I know it not a GX2 problem, but an issue I had with mine, that's why I returned it.

me neither...

I have actually never seen a problem like this with any card before...

This was an isolated case IMO. Posting here was pretty much a last ditch effort before returning the card just to make sure it wasn't a "known" issue that had a simple work around. Through my research I did find out that NV did have some mouse cursor issues with the 80 series drivers, but I never encountered any of those either with previous NV cards.

There is an option - either "hardware cursor" or "hardware-mouse cursor" or something like that. Try changing that setting.

I have had those issues also and I did a few things to remedy the problem.

1. My Northbridge fan failed and was causing heat issues. Replaced it.
2. Removed hardware cursor check to disable the blinking cursor.
3. Removed the 9.XX series driver. THey lock up in WoW. I went back to 84.21 and now I can use hardware cursor with no blinking and no more lockups.

Try this: go to your Display settings in Windows, click the Troubleshooting tab, and lower hardware acceleration by one notch.

1. The motherboard has a heatpipe, no fan. Plus, the issues never occur with a different video card on the same motherboard. So, I don't think this is the issue.
2. Tried that, didn't fix the crashing issue. It might have fixed the blinking cursor issue, but this wasn't the main problem.
3. The 9x.xx drivers may be the problem, but not using them is not an option with a GX2 since the 8x.xx drivers don't support the card. I woud have tried this had it been an option. Interesting that you saw problems with the 9x,xx drivers in WoW though. I would be interested to know if others have as well.
4. I already returned the card

Good post though, and thanks for your effort.

You should post more. We could use more constructive posters around here.

Looks like we're all reading from the same page.

I tried that as well. Two notches also. Neither of those helped, plus two notches gave me a white square around my mouse pointer.

Im glad I could help. I had a user id with more posts I just forgot it lol. I was getting alot of Hard locks and BSOD with the newest drivers only in World of Warcraft. It was very strange so I rolled them back with no problems since.

Note: I also have 2 7800 GT's for sale if your interested in the yard sale forums. I am leaving SLI for a faster single card solution like the Ati X1900XTX. Dont get me wrong the one 7800 GT gets 60 fps in BWL at full settings 1600X1200 resolution and outside it get 90fps. But I want to try to get more. Also most vidoe cards are very cpu dependent. I overclocked my Opteron and got like 20-25fps increase so cpu's are the bottleneck.

I've got a 7900GT OC and I've been having problems in Raiding the FrameRate is dropping down to like 5 in the middle of huge MC & BWL fights. Things aren't even maxed out. Think settings were 4xAA/8xAF using current drivers. I haven't noticed the cursor problem with my setup.

Well, I ended up getting a replacement GX2, and so far so good. I haven't seen any of these issues with the new card. Keeping my fingers crossed.
