So you thought the 1.26 GHz core - 6.30 GHz memory feat was quite something, considering that Sapphire already has a card in the works that does 1.33 GHz core 5.73 GHz memory out of the box? Wait till you see the numbers an overclocker for the MyDrivers community achieved. With the right voltage assistance, coupled with the right kind of cooling (liquid nitrogen), the overclocker achieved a Radeon HD 7970 overclocked speed as high as 1700 MHz core, and 2000 MHz (actual) or 8.00 GHz effective GDDR5 memory speed, churning out memory bandwidth of exactly 384 GB/s. The best part is that this wasn't a hit-and-run feat, the setup was able to run 3DMark 11 and 3DMark Vantage. The scores are pictured below. Details of the volt-mod can be found at the source.

This thing is a monster.

That is a really amazing overclock, which I think kinda backs up Apoppin's theory on the hd7970. I don't necessarily think it will be "short lived," but AMD is definitely holding back with it. If all hd7970's have this much headroom, AMD could have easily released a part with 1000+ mhz on the core now. They're either going to respin it, and come to market with an hd7980 (physically the same as hd970, butsimply higher clocks - noticeably higher clocks), or they are just going to wait until yields naturally improve with the node process maturity and then come out with a higher clocked Tahiti part. It'll be pretty much what the hd4890 was to the hd4870.

I definitely think we'll see a standardized Tahiti GPU with around 1100mhz operating core speed when or close after Kepler's flagship chip hits. Kepler isn't far off either http://www.fudzilla.com/graphics/item/25396-kepler-to-show-its-face-in-q1-2012, so I expect an hd7980 or whatever to be coming soon as well.

4srs who cares about liquid nitrogen though? Nobody does that for their daily gamer. It's like everybody getting excited about 7.2Ghz Phenom 2's on LN2-- so what? Nobody got past 4.2ghz, and most were limited to 4.0.
I think these posts get me riled up cause I get all excited to see "1.7ghz on air!!!" and it's "wait no it's on LN2!!! just kidding!!! bait and switch!!!"
