7970 Artifacts

Recently my PC using a 7970 is infested with artifacts on screen. It doesn't matter what I'm doing, artifacts are everywhere, and will eventually crash at no predictable time periods.

I've uninstalling AMD drivers and reinstalling, but this didn't help. Any ideas on this? I'm worried it may be a faulty card and its outside of its warranty..

Sounds like possible bad video memory. You could try it in another machine to verify it is the card.

I've tried a 280x in the same PC and there were no artifacts at all. I'm starting to think the worst :thumbsdown:

Aircooled its whole life? Temps are high on average in your usage? It's probably degraded too far.

Yes, they're spinning and the temps are in the mid to high 70's

Had my 7970 die last September. Was starting to get artifacts and odd colors till it finally took a sharp turn to unusable.

No idea, how to fix these problems, short of replacing the card itself!

Sounds like its dying.

This is the reason I always install aftermarket coolers on my video cards I've never had a card die on me in 15+ years of building pc's.

Concur. Better cooling slows the natural process of degradation.

Time to throw it in the oven!! Card is dying, probably a mem chip BGA solder joint, who knows for sure. But it's a prime candidate for a baking. About 380 in a pre-heated oven for 12min ought to do it.

I have a XTX 7970 Black Ed with the same exact recent issues. Then the screen goes blank with a gray or black screen. I am the original owner, have the box and if I recall came with a lifetime warranty! This card is 3 or 4 years old.

Did you find a solution for your problem?

I second this recommendation. I recently cooked a 7950 and it revived the card. So far it's been about hmm 6 months still working after baking in the oven.

I think I baked at 390 for 10 minutes? I can't recall exactly. Anyway, if your warranty is expired, and you have no other options to return/repair, I would suggest baking the card as you've nothing to lose and could be pleasantly surprised.
