I think those cards aged better than the GeForce 79xx cards they competed with. I mean, both are probably worthless today, but I do think the X19xx cards had a longer useful lifetime.

Sorry, but you've committed one of my biggest pet peeves -- confusing AMD with ATI. AMD didn't buy ATI until 2006, which is after the initial release of R520. Also, R600 is the one that included a lot of features from the Xenos GPU, and it was a huge flop. I'm sure the Xenos development did have a hand in R520 though.AMD saw the writing on the wall and knew that shader performance was much more important than vertex. Of course it helped that AMD was working on Xenos with Microsoft and saw how game development was moving.
