That's about the lowest you'll find the 7970 in Canada, but I found the same Gigabyte model a bit cheaper at NCIX.com. It also comes with the game bundle, which I didn't see at DirectCanada.

Is there something wrong with that model? the PCB seems to be remodeled and it has aftermarket coolers, oc'd for consumer but I'm not sure - i've always bought reference models.

I don't have any experience with that model, but I can say that my OC'ed Gigabyte 460 has been doing very well for me for over 2 years. It is a similar cooling design, but with only 2 fans.

Hopefully more 7970 users can chime in.

NCIX just had the MSI 7970 for $299 AR but it sold out... they did have 30 of them I believe.

Every week they usually have one 7970 under $350.00 with the Game special. You can PM there too online. (I've price matched dozens of items and never been declined, doesn't delay anything, usually takes a few hours after order on next bday).

By far my favorite Canadian retailer... When I order in the morning I get it the next day with there Express shipping. (Ontario to New Brunswick overnight by Purolator)

(directcanada is owned by NCIX but lacks the promotional offers, but often counter offer with lower regular pricing)

Hey guys, was wondering what a good price is for a 7970 nowadays, and if I should wait or buy now.

I've found these two which seem reasonable, anything wrong with them?

392.39 (CAD) - 7970 1000mhz OC edition - free shipping
http://www.directcanada.com/products/?sku=16950BD0659&vpn=GV-R797OC-3GD&manfuacture=GIGABYTE

419 (CAD) - 7970 (reference I think)
http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX37453

NCIX has the Gigabyte card above for $389 with the Game Bundle

It's shit like this that I would be obviously all over. I think 400 is steep for a card.

Thanks for the info. Is there any way to track the deals, or do you just gotta keep alert.

NCIX sets the new deals every Wednesday night at 10pm EST. The great deals are often gone by the next day. It will be a flash add on the front page.

To be honest if your going to overclock I'd pick up a 7950.

$289 is best deal they have right now for the XFX DD Version - http://ncix.com/products/?sku=67748&vpn=FX795ATDFC&manufacture=XFX&promoid=1310

They had much better deals last week.

Trying to understand performance...

7850 to a 7870, is what a 5850 is to a 5870?

Meaning I can just overlock to a 5870 and say w/e?

At the same time I'd like to OC that 7870 far beyond the 7850.

To note, right now I have crossfired two 5850's and OC'd to 5870ish range.

5870 (Essentially in todays model scheme would be a "5970" = 6950 = 7850 Stock (Pretty Close)

7850 will overclock 30-50% depending on the card with excellent scaling, putting most in GTX 580 land and some in 7950 territory.

An overclocked 7950 will crack 10000 3DMarks, making it faster than a stock 7970.

An Overclocked 7970 is pretty much the fastest single GPU available right now.

Best bang for your buck would be overclocking a 7850 then eh?

I'm gonna bump this thread with another question:

What's a comparable Nvidia card? The Physx stuff that Nvidia owns kinda of pisses me off being a radeon owner.

Should I wait for the next gen nvidia cards to come out?

That all depends on how happy you are with your current setup... Is there a reason for the upgrade, or do you just have an itch?

Big itch, and probably performance.

Currently have a 955BE at ~3.85 cooled by a noctua nhd14 sitting on an asus ROG extreme motherboard with crossfired 5850s oc'd to 5870, 8 gig mem and ssd.... so it all works fine but...

yeah itch.

Was thinking of just getting the video card at the moment, then go to upgrading the mobo and proc later... or cheap out and just upgrade the card and proc keeping the board.
