Rizenet.com and Monarch Computer Systems have teamed up to provide you with a sweet deal. Own a SocketA board? Or a Socket370 board? Want to update that old, pathetic cooler you're running? Then upgrade to a Thermaltake Chrome Orb! For a limited time, if you call Sterling at Monarch Computer Systems and mention Rizenet, you will get a Chrome Orb for $8.00 US with free shipping! The Chrome Orb is a solid SocketA cooler, and it offers extra protection for those fragile Socket A chips. To contact Sterling, call him at 1-800-611-0875, extension 13. Enjoy!

Is there a difference between this chrome orb and a golden orb? Is it as good? Anyone deal with these guys before?

this is a HOT deal. i paid $17.50 for mine after taxes. its decent, not superb by any means, as i'm getting about 48.0C reading for cpu and i'm only overclocking from 650 to 900. the case lid is off too. with the lid on, it zooms up to 56.0C

for this price its worth it tho. and free shipping at that!

CRAP I just paid like $28 shipped about a month ago for the same heatsink... other than having the cpu fan header burnt out on my motherboard and thus rendering it useless(until I figured out how to rig up the ide power connector with pins to power it)it looked and felt like it kicked ass...

I also have a socket 370 slotket celeron. Am I all set?
edit: Here is some info for socket 370 users, these guys http://www.tweaktown.com/articles/corb_socket370/ have put the chrome orb on a socket 370 cpu and said that it works fine, no modifications required. However the chrome orb is only designed for SocketA, therefore running it with a celeron or PIII is at your own risk.

I just replied to this thread and I used the word "s hit" and it didn't show up. It displayed the word in bright yellow and now its gone.

Does this software edit "naughty" words out?

any way

GREAT DEAL BUT...........

WARNING TO KT7-RAID users

You must shave 4 of the aluminum fins down enough to get the orb to clear the capacitors that are adjacent to the cpu.

It took me about an hour with an exacto knife.

i think every person's mileage may vary on having to modify this orb. i have the abit kt7raid and i had the good fortune of being able to just stick it right in there w/out any modifications. there is about half an inch between the orb and the little blue capacitors.

i did, however, have to take out my powersupply temporarily so i could have enough room to move around to put the orb on. it fit real snugly on there like a size B bra on anna nicole smith. in other words, the fit was really tight, but still possible.

Thermaltake no longer recommends the Golden Orb for Socket A Athlons or Durons. The Chrome Orb was redesigned just for those CPUs. Pricewatch is showing Chrome Orbs for $8.00 and up now. Also worth mentioning is that the new Super Orb has just been released. It's taller than the Golden or Chrome, but has a twin fan setup @ 10K RPM. Here's a review from HardOCP: http://www.hardocp.com/reviews/cooling/supaorb/

Free shipping and $8 for the ORB? Wowsers.... I'm getting one tomorrow morning and I don't even have a Duron yet (or a motherboard to put one in).

Hmm...sounds like the chrome orb ain't that great according to Spindler's post. I'm using the heatsink/fan combo that came with the retail Duron 600MHz and I'm running it at 900MHz at 37°C. Was that 48.0°C after you ran a game or something?

Now that this is no longer about $8.00... to all you KT7-Raid users out there with a 600 duron. Please tell me your bios setting to get up there, or direct me to a site that has a clear demonstration of the settings. what they should or should not be.

thanks in advance

hey i have a kt7 raid ... so what do you guys recommend for a heatsink/fan cooler other than the option of shaving a chrome orb for an hour?

From experience:

The Chrome orb is junk.
The Vantec is junk
The Stock heatsink is junk.

The FOP32 is good
The FOP38 IS THE BEST POSSIBLE (along with a pep)
Taisol is an affordable Great heatsink (not best)

If you are going to overclock, and your room temp exceeds 72C i STRONGLY suggest against the chrome orb. Its about as bad as the vantec. My system gets up to 55C when i turn the heat on cold nights (76C room temp). 1.85V Asus a7v Duron 600@950.

You get what you pay for. The $13 group buy on taisol's are worth ALOT more than the chrome orb, when it comes to natural air heat dissapation.

I was tweaking around w/ the voltage on my Asus A7v. I disconnect the fan on the HSF and forgot about it. An hour later, my CPU is still alive. I have the same Taisol HSF from that group buy. Don't try this at home!:Q

Does anybody know if these fit the Abit BP-6 mobo with dual celerons(med) ? I remember there were some issues with the golden orb and bp-6 where you had to manually modify the gorbs.

Thanks,
-esprit

For user that still want to use the ORB with the KT7 and KT7-Raid, just switch the order the other way it should work fine. I don't know how people are getting 56 or higher with the ORB, I am running at 42 112@896 loaded v1.8.

For the guys with their case open, if you got good circulation, it's better if the case is closed. Found my temperature to be lower when the case is closed, not true if hot air are not getting out.

The Chrome orb is specifically designed to work with the Socket A processors. It has special copnnections that make it specific to the AMD's

You can't mount it backwards because the orb itself is offset and by doing so you will not seat the HSF correctly on the processor.
