Just like the title says. I was reluctant to use windows 8 forever, but my friends that I play with were always telling me what their FPS was in the game, and I almost didn't believe them. The one thing they had in common that I didn't was windows 8.1 while I was still using win 7. I'm thrilled with it and would highly recommend it if you want the best performance out of BF4, and quite frankly the game only runs properly on windows 8 based on my experience. Windows 7 feels like it breaks the game and is not optimized to work correctly.

That's pretty cool!

I wonder why that is? Do you think it's because of better use / optimization of multiple cores?

I remember hearing something about better CPU optimization. It might be a DX 11.1 thing from what I remember.

Not only that, but games generally run faster and load quicker on Windows 8 and 8.1 due to better scheduler and more efficient use of memory.

If you're a gamer, you're doing yourself a disservice by staying on Windows 7..

I run 8.1 on 4 different systems and have been running 8 since it came out. Apart from the wonky Intel USB 3 performance (also in 8) which is now 50/50 chance of proper speed in 8.1 (and seems to be improving) everything is liquid. BF4 too, my 280X easily sings, only odd dips in single player when lots of things blow where the frame plummets to 30-40. I can't see why anyone would still want to remain on 7 - its now 4yrs old going on 5, and doesn't have all these core platform improvements. I also chuckle whenever I read businesses once again are upgrading from ancient XP to an already ageing old platform.

Like Moonbogg stated, it uses DX 11 better and I believe that BF4 was more optimized for windows 8.

Damn has it been 5 years now? Time flies..

And businesses are always a bit behind the curve. It takes a lot of planning to migrate platforms in addition to getting people to upgrade.

Its direct X 11.2 which isnt coming to windows 7, the best 7 gets is 11.1 i think.

Nothing to do with the scheduler etc.

BF4 is optimized for DX11.1, and Windows 7 only has partial support for DX11.1

Nothing to do with the scheduler etc.

I don't know if you're referring to me, but I never cited the scheduler as the reason for the performance gains under Windows 8.1. The improvements to the scheduler does increase performance generally speaking though. I noticed that games ran a bit faster and smoother when I made the jump from Windows 7 to Windows 8, and I'm sure this was due to the improved thread scheduler.

It sounds like if Microsoft had just made the "under the hood" improvements and released a 7.1 they would have had a winner.

I just loaded 8.1 on my older gaming rig and quite frankly I am beginning to wonder if all the problems people supposedly are having are not user based problems!!

This is the 3rd machine I have loaded 8.1 on and the only time it took was to download 8.1 and install it with no issues!!

I'm keeping Win 7 on one of my laptops, but my other laptop and 2 PC's has 8.1 which updated flawlessly but the 4th PC I updated the other day had a hiccup and removing Steelseries engine fixed that- when is Steelseries releasing a fix for that?

And yes some of my older games just operate better on 8.1, MS has come a long ways since Vista on netcode and memory management. As already stated, if you're a gamer, you're missing out when you stick to Win 7.

A lot of Win8.1 users have no gaming issues,I don't have any mouse issues in gaming and I've quite a few games installed,I no longer care or need Win7 its history for me so Win7 can RIP,any issues Win8.1 for the user in question will be fixed just like Win7 issues were fixed etc...

I will say DX11.2 is going to be inclusive to Win8/8.1 and XBOX ONE only, so gaming wise Win7 is not getting anything new unlike Win8/8.1 ,http://www.techpowerup.com/186671/directx-11-2-exclusive-to-windows-8-1-and-xbox-one.html ,DX 11.2 cards are here so only a matter of time before the first DX11.2 games arrive.
