There are no commercial pebble bed reactors currently operating.

It's going to be fine. It's a BWR, an older one. Too bad it's not an ESBWR, it would have handled this beautifully.

Well as we know, politicians will take any story and change it to fit their agenda so if there's even word of anything not 100% with them the politicians will use it as ammo not to have more of them here.

What a fucking retarded comment. Assuming God is real (which I won't get into here), you don't think that two nuclear bombs dropped on innocent people is enough?

Many Japanese people weren't even alive during the times you're referring to. You think they deserve to be punished?

This response took 8 pages. You make me sick.

What did Africa and Haiti do to deserve their poverty where hundreds of thousands starve and die each day?

According to your God, America is the most corrupted nation with divorce, gays, sex, and pornography. It's a modern day Sodom and Gomorrah. Yet, this country is quite prosperous. Explain that. We're due for a mass disaster and deaths, right?

Go join Westborough nutjobs, you freak.

No.... No it doesn't.... I can think of a large number of other countries more deserving. But I digress so back to the OP.

likely they laid down one lane of payment at a time so they joined in the middle and broke at the seam?

That picture IS indeed puzzling.

The pavement layer is what, 3-6" thick at most? The freaking earth SPLIT perfectly below for couple of feet. WTF? The pavement is nothing but a blanket on top of soil.

I want to know how they get away with 3-6" thick roads...

3-6" pavement is pretty normal. The sub-grade may be much deeper, depending on soil conditions and local regulations, but if the ground is good and solid, a couple of inches of compacted roadbase and 3-6 inches of asphalt is all that's required.

Not likely no freeze thaw cycle. I understand it gets quite cold in the earthquake zone. Here in america's wang - the geologically inactive coral still requires a decent foundation and a crushed rock layer before the asphalt surface.

I'm already loving the "America's reactors are not prepared!" propaganda I'm seeing. Ridiculous.

He exaggerated and lied and, as proven by my reply, he doesn't know what he's talking about. I called him on it. His post served no purpose other than to insult. If that doesn't qualify as trolling, I don't know what does.

Apparently they're about to vent some slightly tritiated steam to relieve pressure. Not a huge deal, but the media is going to eat this up.

To minimize traffic impacts, pavement is shaved and paved one lane at a time. If it's brand new, asphalt roller/compactor thingies are only about one lane wide. The weekest point where fresh, hot asphalt got put down beside already-laid, cold asphalt is likely along the centre line.

With how much the roadbase is compacted before putting everything else ontop, it essentially becomes one hard unit. Once the crack starts at the weak point in the center, it propogates down and voila, you get that shape.

That's my best guess for a civil engineer in training working with a transportation/highway department.

my guess is it was the cars traveling in each lane and compacting the ground underneath it, making it more stable then the earth in between each lane. but im not a geologomolist
