This tsunami was simply beyond expectations. One town had already experienced a tsunami during the 19th century and another in the 1930s. As a result, they had built a 10m-high seawall as tsunami protection. Survivors say this tsunami went 4 metres over that seawall. (from NHK TV report)

The thixotropic ground litterally swallowed people up to their neck and then resolidified as soon as the vibration ceased. People could not extract themselves and suffocated or died from exposure. Birds picked at the heads. Horrible death. We learned about this in my sedimentology courses in the early 80s.
