Just heard that 2000 bodies washed up on the shoreline.

I think more will show up in the next few days.

RIP

Tide of 1,000 bodies overwhelms quake-hit Japan

TAKAJO, Japan – A tide of bodies washed up along Japan's coastline, crematoriums were overwhelmed and rescue workers ran out of body bags as the nation faced the grim reality of a mounting humanitarian, economic and nuclear crisis Monday after a calamitous tsunami.

Millions of people were facing a fourth night without water, food or heating in near-freezing temperatures in the northeast devastated by an earthquake and the wave it spawned.

I read the article and I follow that, but really... this should never have happened as it did.

While I still don't think there is or will be a major meltdown that threatens the public, I have to agree that thing should have been done differently with regards to one thing, the explosions. I understand why they vented the gas into the outside chamber to give it time to stop being radioactive on the first reactor, but after it exploded potentially causing damage to the primary container, why in the hell would they allow the second to do the same??

No damage was done to the primary containments of any of the reactors.

Yes I know, but they are just Steel and Concrete. Why risk cracking them with explosions if the gas isn't really that harmful anyway? Plus it just looks really bad.

Unless I'm totally missing something the Japanese people have handled this situation amazingly well. Everyone seems to be coming together and helping out. I don't see reports of violence and looting. That's what really struck me the most is how well everything is being handled.

Just steel and concrete? It's a 6" steel liner with 8-10 feet of concrete.

Venting the hydrogen had nothing to do with radioactivity, it had to do with relieving the pressure inside the primary containment.

Japan's society is 1000x better than our society. All begins with how people are raised when they are young. They have strict parenting in Japan, we have no responsible parenting here. (Not all, but sadly a majority these days.)

And, please explain, what you really think happened?

Facts:
-Plant was designed for 8.2, was functionally fine after 8.9/9.0
-Plant shut down the chain reaction as it should have.
-Plant was cooling the reactors fine.
-Then the tsunami hit, which didn't destroy the plant either
-The tsunami destroyed the primary power source (the national grid), AND took out multiple sets of backup diesel generators
-The plants own battery backup worked for 8 hours as designed (even after 8.9 earthquake AND a 30 ft tsunami)
-The mobile generators brought in didn't have the required connectors which is about the only "fault" I see so far
-In order to prevent a total meltdown they have allowed some low level radioactive byproducts have been allowed out of the core. These radioactive elements will either decay or be diluted to the point where you might get exposed to slightly more radiation then you would in a normal day.

I look forward to your expert analysis of what happened.

So, please do explain, what exactly is it that you think happened?

Why was a plant designed for 8.2 when 9+ as possible in the area.

When designing things, you have to weigh cost with probability if you want to be able to earn money on the investment.

To build an 8.2 it might have cost lets say $100 million, but for a 9.0 $300 million (remember it's ~5x more powerful than an 8.2). So, what are the odds that a 9.0 would happen? California sits in a very active seismic region, and *could* get a 9.0. How many buildings do you think are rated for that?

Thumbs up to Russia for upping its energy supply to Japan.

pick off BBC

"More international support for Japan: Russian President Dmitry Medvedev says it is his country's "moral responsibility" to help Japan and ordered the government to increase energy supplies to the country, AFP reports."

Really?... I don't find it the case. I find it more of the case with this proverb:

Cost prohibitive to try to stop one of the most ridiculously powerful forces on the entire planet.

Also, the plant DID survive the earthquake and tsunami. It has done beautifully save the backup reactors going down. But they have backups to the backups, There is no way someone can complain about how Japan has handled these reactors. They have done it beautifully. And the reactors themselves have done beautifully considering what it has experienced.
