1844: Mikan in Tokyo writes: "There is a growing sense that the Japanese government is not telling us the true story. On one end, there is the Japanese media that plays down the nuclear drama and focuses on human drama, and at the other, the foreign media is up-playing the nuclear disaster. In my company I heard at least half the essential staff is being sent to Hong Kong, Singapore or even Sydney. I am preparing to leave Tokyo and/or Japan. So are many of my friends. There is a sense of deserting Tokyo as soon as possible."

with such a high death toll and all of the videos posted so far, how come we don't see dead bodies anywhere? just wondering.

Yeah, yesterday they reported the 2,000 bodies in Myagi...I'm sure there will be many, many more before this is all done.

From a more morbid perspective, it's a good thing that it's cold there...it'll help slow the decomposition process and keep the bodies from stinking so badly...for a while.

We have quite a few Japanese interpreters and translators working for us, and so far most of them reported they and their families are safe: either they were in US or in parts of Japan not affected by the tsunami.

The whole thing is horrendous though. Donated to the Red Cross.

Cat survives Tsunami
(Ripped from Reddit)

That's pretty heartwarming to me. I had a hard time sleeping last night when I watched this poor guy get taken right before hitting bed. I dreamt of my own cats being trapped and drowning.

When we lived in Florida, I had an "oh shit" cooler with water, food and supplies and all pet carriers placed such that we could grab the cats and be heading North/inland in just a few minutes. Aside from tornadoes (where we're safer taking refuge in our basement) or the slim chance of Yellowstone exploding, I can't think of a reason to have such a kit where I live now. I s'pose I should anyway though.

Japan's society is 1000x better than our society. All begins with how people are raised when they are young. They have strict parenting in Japan, we have no responsible parenting here. (Not all, but sadly a majority these days.)

totally disagree with that--but as far discipline and community go, they certainly outclass us. They are handling this disaster with a lot of patience and spirit.

I doubt any world community could live up to their standard under the same tragedy.

I literally cannot think of a single place outside of Japan where something like this would happen and crime didn't become the lead story.

China. Japan has a homogeneous male dominated society with strict hierarchy. Easy to get organized with that in place.

I highly doubt China's would be able to handle this as well as Japan's did. Chinese are not exactly a role model for discipline, and without water, food and electricity, and free-for-all in abandoned dwellings, people would turn into savages in minutes.

Not so much for China, but very likely for South Korea to have such discipline... though I would imagine the North would change that very quickly.

No way. Have you been to China? People don't wait in line for anything. You could be standing at a ticket booth with your hands INSIDE the booth and somebody will force their body in between you and ticket seller.

Crime is not terrible, but not great either. That and the police are pretty damn corrupt, so you can count on certain groups of people getting aid first.
