I don't think it's the plates that are affected as much as the magma underneath the plates.
It's a thick viscous liquid, and I believe the movement in one place affects it in other places.
Of course, I'm not a vulcanologist, geologist, or smart guy in any way...

Phones are likely out and/or swamped at the moment. Japan is a modern industrialized country with extremely good building codes and emergency services. I'm sure he's fine. Earthquakes are really only truly horrific in unprepared places (think Hati in 2010 versus LA in 1994).
Tsunami sirens going off right now in Hilo. Apparently the wave can wrap around island and hit us in the east coast.
Note that while tsunami warnings have been posted for Hawaii, they have not been posted for the US west coast or Alaska. All the time charts are automatic predictions of when a potential tsunami would hit based on origin and final location.Keep in mind, a lot of the country is without electricity because they've shut down the nuclear power plants...

The Japanese are well prepared for this kind of stuff, but I'm not sure what kind of preparation you can make for an 8.9. The two bright sides at this point are that it hit off the coast instead of on land, and that since it was 20 miles down the energy release was mitigated some.
The results are still going to be bad near the coasts, I fear.
PS For the last time, the Richter Scale is logarithmic. For every whole point increase in scale, the severity of the earthquake is 10 times worse.
Wonder what the death toll is going to be. Much lower than in poor countries no doubt but looking at the amazing footage of that tsunami it's hard to imagine many people surviving being in the path of that thing. Most if not all the deaths are going to be a result of the tsunami and not the initial earth quake.
