At least this is a first world country. If it was like Haiti that got hit with an 8.9, shit would be fucked.

Yea my brother told me Japan is even more prepared than Los Angeles since the Japanese people as we know follow orders to a t so it's much easier to control the population.

According to the BBC website from the OP, a dam has failed, washing away many homes, 300+ known dead, at least 500 people are missing, death toll expected to top 1000.

Oh, it's the 5.0's we have hundreds of per day, thousands per year. Still, hundreds of 6+ per year isn't far from that.

http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eqarchives/year/eqstats.php

Still not getting it? There are NOT normally hundreds of 5.0+ quakes every day...and there's a HUGE jump from 5.0 to 6.0.
I know in an earlier post, you said:
It makes perfect sense if you're not a fucking geologist.
in reply to your misunderstanding about the Richter Scale...but apparently, you're still missing the point.
Not only is the shaking greatly worse, the amount of energy expended is greater by several magnitudes.
One "expert" said earlier that this quake was 8000 times more powerful than the 6.3 that hit NZ a couple of weeks ago.

Nik is physically incapable of admitting he is wrong about something.

A sibling was planning on going to Tokyo (tickets bought, vacation booked) in two weeks. Tokyo didn't sound too hard hit, just no power right now with the nuclear plant problem. Wonder if the travel advisery will still be around in two weeks.

Good luck Japan.

I think it will be fine in Tokyo.

As I said early for each 1 increase in magnitude, movement inceases by 10 times and energy release increases by 32 times. So compared the th 6.2 this one released around 11,000 times as much energy. Assuming it was an 8.9 it would be aproximatly 32^2.7 times as much energy.

Nuke plant in trouble. zOMG if it melts down we will NEVER get teh proper nuclear tech we need in the USA, nor anywhere else until fusion power happens. TMI was such a big deal here. If Japan can't build a MD-free plant then we are all doomed to fossil fuels. Anyone know the design of the plant having trouble? I suspect it isn't one of the newfangled pebble-bed or any that cannot meltdown by design.

Looks like the tsunami waves created a bit of havoc in some of the west coast harbors...docks damaged, boats damaged and/or sunk.

There are no commercial pebble bed reactors currently operating.

It's going to be fine. It's a BWR, an older one. Too bad it's not an ESBWR, it would have handled this beautifully.

Makes you wonder if God's Hands aren't responsible for this. Punish the Japanese for all the bad stuff they've done in the past century.
