Well when the 1090T was released it competed very well, in performance per dollar terms, with Intel's top chips at the time.

The start price is excellent, AMD is a king of price wars, I can easily see this CPU drop to ~$200 within 1 or 2 quarters after release.

?

Similar price to 2600K, should offer similar or better multithreaded performance.

What's not to like?

As stated above, initial pricing means nothing in terms of performance.

If it is better on programs that actually take advantage of 8 cores, but is not as good on the majority of programs.....I can't see that price holding for long.

This isn't someone selling a piece of gum in the shape of Jesus on ebay. Initial pricing does mean something. It means AMD is confident it has a real chance to compete with sandy bridge. Not that this is exactly news.

As for it not holding that price for long, that's entirely speculation at this point since we don't have any benchmarks.

Or it means they cannot afford to drop the prices of all their older products to make room for a new $200 'flagship'.

$300 seems like a solid price-point for their 8-core CPU. Hopefully it is competitive with the 2500/2600K. The price would seem to reflect that is in the same performance ballpark, but we will see.

Speculation??? Please. If they had a dominating part it'd be well over $300 I'm sure.

The real question is how much s it gonna cost at microcenter

Might be worth tinkering around with if they do the usual AMD deals.

300 today. but i'm willing to bet intel will try to steal their thunder and drop the price of their $300 counterpart. so to make amd more expensive than what it is going up against.

then again, if that were to happen, you have to factor in amd is both cpu + gpu, so i suppose one could argue that it would cost the same or more if you went intel + (better)gpu

More likely Intel will refresh the 2500 and 2600 with higher clocks, Intel won't undercut AMD unless they feel threatened. It's possible they might release a new SKU specifically designed to be price/perf comparable to whatever they think is the mainstream BD cpu, though. They have done that with the new SB pentium mobile chip B940 to steal some thunder from the Llano notebook launch.

Well its smaller then a Thuban and that is hitting under $200. In terms of production cost, all the CPU's have amazing margins. AMD needs either the market penetration or ASP to drive future development and cover the R&D of the current chip. So I doubt they are selling BD at $300 because can't sell it for cheaper, they are selling it at $300 because they think that it will sell well enough for their production projections at that amount.

Pricing alone isn't indicative of overall performance though. Phenom II 955 is superior for multi-threaded apps (video encoding, rendering, audio encoding) but loses to the Core i3-2100 in games, office apps, and other common every day tasks. We'll find out soon enough.

The 955 is also cheaper.

Additionally the 955 has a much larger die size compared to the i3 2100.

Did I say they had a dominating part? NO! Did anyone here suggest they have a dominating chip? NO! Do you continue to promote speculation and one red herring after another? YES!

Intel doesn't lower their prices unless they are forced to. Stealing AMD's thunder just isn't worth the cost to them and by law they can't put them out of business. If worst comes to worst they'll just stomp on them again when they release ivy bridge.

AMD has an EIGHT core chip that will be priced UNDER Intel's current FOUR core chip. What does that tell you?

8-core Zambezi confirmed to be priced approx. $300

Confirmed to be approximately?

What about that is a confirmation?

I can solidly confirm the price is a number! That number, however, can only be stated as an approximation to the actual number, which, uh, I can't actually confirm because no one but AMD knows it at this time. :hmm:

Just when I thought the BD hype couldn't get any sillier...

Well, some of the unwashed masses will certainly be swayed by a badge proclaiming an OCTOCORE chip in their next PC purchase, and they certainly won't be perusing benchmarks on Anandtech... Marketing can sometimes work wonders.

It's an official AMD page stating the price will be approximately $300. If it said approximately $200 or approximately $400 we would have different information. What about this is so hard to grasp?

Does this mean we get to look forward to another new thread when they 'offically' narrow it down to a $20 aproximation?
