This 8 Ghz overclocking project just hit Digg and its about to explode to popular. I don't know if it was posted here yet but I figured ya'll already know about it. If not, enjoy!

There's a few photos there of the thing running. Pretty cool. Well, with the Liquid Nitrogen I guess we can say very cool.

Nice!

Netburst though...is it even faster at 6.3GHz than a stock E4300?

Still quite a feat, nevertheless.

If I'm not mistaken, these are my estimates:
Clock for clock:
1GHZ Core2=2GHZ Pentium 4
1GHZ Athlon 64=1.6GHZ Pentium 4.

So theoretically it would take 4GHZ on a Core 2 to match those speeds if you were only using one core on the Core 2.

That's pretty impressive...I wonder how far they'd be able to take a C2D with that kind of cooling?

I like this - the OP diggs his own article on dig and then comes to AT to talk about how it is about to explode in popularity - sweet. Me loves spam.

With this setup they are at 6.3 ghz right now and working on 8 Ghz.

Here's what I don't get about some of these self-congratulatory thread title efforts. OK, so they overclocked to 6.3GHz. Yeah, give them a ribbon. But there is no 8GHz O/C here. They may as well claim their goal is 7 GHz, 9 GHz, or 6.31 GHz. For that matter why not title the digg "200 GHZ Overclocking Project"...then talk about how kewl you are because you digg your own article on digg.

If you read on to the second post, it says that they got to 7 GHz. I have only read a little bit myself, but it looks like they are getting prety close.

8 GHz has already been done, a loooong time ago (with NetBurst... a Prescott, I believe? I don't remember). I don't have the link anymore, but I definitely remember seeing a video of it. It's probably on youtube or something.

We hit 7GHz with our First CPU and moved to LN2 but killed the board and CPU with condensation.

After testing 3 more chips we found another good Overclocker hitting 6.45 on Dry Ice, and will be using LN2 once again but with much improved methods of insulation.

Very nice pictures of their setup...I'm surpised anyone could get LN2 to work, as it usually causes a lot of condensation even on insulated containers, and I'd have thought this would be deadly to a motherboard.

They *claim* they might try L4He, but I find this claim to be a little over the top, unless they are loaded. They would need vacuum sealed tubing and it would be increadibly expensive, L4He is about $7/liter in Oregon. It would never be liquid in truth, as it boils much more easily than water and is only a liquid below -450 F. Put that on your desktop! If they were able to deliver sufficiently cold He gas to the processor, you'd still have the condensation problem. What they'd really need to do is put the whole setup in vacuum or a N2 environment to limit condensation. I hope they have a solid investor in their cause.

so if they hit 7ghz, then it would be more like a 3.5ghz c2d? that is doable on air cooling. anyone know what the record is for P4s? ive only heard of 7ghz

so that means buy an e6300 or a P4 with a $5,000 liquid nitrogen cooling kit.

If you're going for sheer speed in an attempt to break a record, then it makes sense to use the Pentium 4.

Err ok, sheer speed in MHz means nothing, as has been proved again and again, and yet again. :disgust:

yeah, that's a given, but there is nothing practical about this feat. They're just trying to break this specific record, not any performance record.
