Usually its timing as opposed to quantity. If it snows 3 feet at 10pm the night before, they will have time to plow it before the school buses come out in the morning. If it snows 4 inches at 5am then they won't have time to plow and school will probably be delayed. If it starts snowing at 5am and isn't supposed to stop until 2pm then it will be canceled. Usually it is ice, freezing rain, sleet, and slush on the roads that will get school canceled quicker than just some powder snow.

I could never understand why when something like this happens...... Snow, hurricane, huge storms, etc. Why people buy tons of bread and milk??!?? Bread goes bad and milk will spoil without refrigeration.

So your power goes out for a few days and you're a dumbass!

Beer, bottled water and canned foods are smart choices.

as long a the roads are being plowed, school doesn't close unless temperatures drop below -45 F with wind chill.

Usually anything more than 2 inches is enough for a school cancellation nowadays. It was more like 6 inches growing up, but they seem more paranoid of snow and ice related lawsuits now.

This. For the 12 years I was in public school I think it was canceled for snow 2 or 3 times. One time it wass -40 something with windchill and school still wasn't canceled. One of the times it was canceled was because we got about 3" of freezing rain after about 2 inches of snow. The busses couldn't get out of the garages because the doors were iced shut.

I remember having so much fun ice skating over the hills and such that were in the park behind my house, or on the streets themselves. You couldn't walk, but we all had ice skates. Going down the huge hills on skates was scary as hell, you could probably hit 50-60 MPH. If you caught your skate on a long piece of grass that was sticking out of the ice, it really hurt when you did the face plant at that speed. But oh god was it fun.

3" sounds a little high; 3" of freezing rain would cripple a region for weeks (no power.) But, yeah, freezing rain will cancel schools.

The decision, at least in my district, is made by the superintendent after conferring with the state police & transportation director. The decision to close is based on whether it would be safe or not to bring the students into school. Sometimes, 2 inches, accompanied by an icy road surface is enough to cancel school; other times, 16 inches in 24 hours won't. It's all about safety.

Not the case for NYC Public Schools.

The thing about snow in places where it never snows is, the city doesn't have the equipment to deal with it. That's why even one inch can be a problem. A place where it snow every year has no problem with alot of snow because it happens every year and they're prepared with the salt trucks and snow plows.

We have to have A LOT of snow to cancel school where I'm from. At least a foot. Usually with ice underneath from freezing rain.

ROFL I grew up 30 miles west of Rochester, outside Hilton, and attended the schools there. I swear, EVERY other school system AND the airport had to be closed before they'd close down our schools!! I stood out in a damn blizzard for an hour one time, waiting on the school bus, before they finally decided that the foot of snow per hour was enough to finally cancel school for the day.

8" of snow all depends on how it falls, too. I've seen blizzards come in, dump about that much, and drift like crazy. 8" is just what fills up the gauge. Drift it into 3 foot drifts (or higher), and you've got a fun time!!
