8'' of snow?

We had 8'' of snow (in some parts) of Las Vegas yesterday. The school district decided to cancel school day, the first time in nearly 30 years. Seeing the jerk faces who go 85mph on the freeways drive 35mph was interesting. When a city as a whole has no idea how to deal with weather like that, the results can be entertaining.

Now, a question for all of you midwest and east coast people....how bad does the weather have to be for school to be canceled?

snow is not a big deal, freezing rain however, is scary as hell.

We have school unless the roads aren't plowed with at least a foot covering them.

And the roads are plowed. All the time. Every night it snows.

Unless two feet of snow gets shit out of the sky at 5AM, we have school.

no...not even close. It has to be a foot...which actually is close to 8 inches....so I take that back.

I'm in Pittsburgh, where we get snow quite a bit in the winter (though this season hasn't been bad at all yet). I think 8" of snow is enough to get it canceled pretty much anywhere. Its more about the road conditions than the amount of snow. If a decent amount comes down during the night, the road crews usually can't get the roads cleared enough for it to be "safe" for the buses.
I have a 2nd grader too - I'd say on average we have about 2 cancellations per year and maybe 5 or so 2-hour delays. Only one 2-hour delay this year so far I think.

It all depends on your area. Rural areas will cancel more often than suburban/city areas because of how the dirt roads usually aren't cleared (buses start early in the morning as well... people can live up to 45 minutes away and still go to some rural schools). Then of course there's also the impending snow that may cancel schools and it's always funny when the system moves out and you get no snow .

In NC, near the coast, anything over a inch that sticks would cause all milk, bread, etc... to sold out. Schools on close watch and/or just closed. and so forth.

In NYC that's enough to shut down most schools. Of course it only takes a couple of inches really to cripple the subway system and that's enough to persuade people to stay home from work.

Where I'm originally from in southeastern CT yes, that will close at least the high schools. Now, in Rochester, NY...no way in hell. Last time they canceled school here it was because of the 2 inches of solid ice on everything.

I don't pay much attention to school closings, but the last one time i remember in boston wasn't from the snow on the streets, it was caused by the fact that there was too much snow to clear the sidewalks to kids waiting for the bus would have to stand in the streets. The city was wondering wtf to do with the snow cause we kept getting more and had no place to put it.

Bah, I never had a real snow day before. In all the time I spent at school, I've only had a few days cancelled acuse of snow. And all of these were cancelled after I already woke up and got there in the first place.

That and the damn lake my city is beside seems to deflect most systems.

We're getting 6-12" tonight and tomorrow. Should be fun. Nothing will close unless the plow drivers sleep in and don't have the roads clear. Each school district decides that for themselves though so we'll see what we get on the news in the morning.

But I know I'll be driving in to work as usual.

...er...
Im in Fayette county 40 miles just south of the city... Unless accompanied by sleet or freezing rain, Minimal of a foot for cancellation. 8 inches is merely a 2hour delay with no morning kindergarden. Of course you must also consider 8 inches in Uniontown is about 14 inches in the mountains at ohio pyle.

However snow removal in pittsburgh is far less efficient than snow removal out in the stix.
I got one question for you... since every road in pittsburgh has jersey barriers on both sides, where do they actually remove the snow to? its much easier to plow snow when you can just push it off to the shoulder of the road.

8" of snow would have gotten school cancelled easy in NY. A few inches could be a delay.

8in in NJ isn't enough I think depending on the towns.
I'm right by the GWB so snow removal is pretty efficient around my area.

I remember my school rarely closing... even when we had the blizzard.

8" in the north east or midwest? No.
In Vegas? Hell yes. The city is simply not equipped or trained to handle that kind of snow.

It all depends on how the snow falls and when it falls... 8" could be the accumulation over the course of a day of snowfall, which isn't much. If 8" falls (heavily) overnight, then chances are school will be canceled.
