Depends on when it started, if it has stopped, how fast it is falling, etc. Or in other words - it depends on the road conditions. If 8" fell overnight and it stopped by 4 in the morning, you're probably going to have a delayed start at most.

RIT or UofR?

My hometown in Massachusetts... yes, 8" would cancel it, and make traffic a nightmare. Bread and milk would sell good, but not usually to empty shelves. RIT would just laugh.

I still don't know why everyone runs out and buys milk & bread right before a snow storm.

Yeah. I buy bread anyway for eggs, so that would be my reasoning.

Buy milk? Wtf you want milk for if you aren't going to buy cereal as well?

I'd probably get some frozen sh!t instead.

Here in the DC Metro Area, 8 inches would be akin to the apocalypse. It's been a while since I remember that much. No school for a couple of days and everyone telecommutes to work. Heck, in Fairfax, if there's an inch they'll close all the schools. They treat every snow storm as the Big One.

In Vegas? Hell yes. The city is simply not equipped or trained to handle that kind of snow.

QFT...I was driving around yesterday, and people were actually being cautious while they drove. Which is nice, because when we have rain, people tend to think that they can drive like assholes with no consequence.

My schoolboards school cancellation policy is pretty dumb, 50 cm on the ground with additional snow falling = cancelled school. But realistically if it's anywhere half that amount, no one comes to school anyways and all the staff is late 2 hours. The kids in the school just watch movies all day long or relax in the gym.

8" of snow here in southern NY would probably cancel school, depending on the road conditions.

Really depends on where, as well as how fast it's actually accumulating. 8" over 24 hours isn't bad, but halve the time and things start to get trickier.

I went to school up in the UP of Michigan, and we never had classes cancelled for snow. Not even the December where it snowed all month without stopping (300" that season). In my last year, we did have classes made "at your discretion" due to a nasty ice storm, but still not officially cancelled.

It depends a lot on how quickly it all came down and on the area in which the school district is located.

For example, 8" of show falling over an 8-hour period is not a problem as it gives the plows enough time to keep the roads salted and cleared. But if that same 8" falls in 2-3 hours right before the beginning of the school day, it can be enough.

Also, there's a difference for rural and urban districts and even how the land is laid out. Country roads are often plowed/salted last and in flat country there can be big issues with blowing/drifting if there are high winds.

In general though, most eastern areas are prepared and 8" won't be enough on its own, it needs to either come down too fast or be accompanied by high winds or something like that. But it's all in the preparation. If an area doesn't have plows and a good salting infrastructure then 8" of any sort is more than enough to cancel things.

In the southeast they close the schools down if they THINK it's going to snow.

8" of snow here will close the schools if it's fresh powder on the 24" base. actually, snow just delays schools, they'd be hardpressed to stop schools here just because of snow.

Schools around here have grown as wussified about snow as they are about everything else. 8" is MORE than enough to close schools. In some cases schools will shut down early just on the threat of a severe storm on the way.

depends. back in maine school wasn't typically cancelled unless it was still snowing in the morning when they made their decision (usually around 4am). so we could get 6"+ of snow, but if it stopped, then we'd still have school. and if it WAS cancelled, then the teachers just wanted a day off.

I'll let you know in the morning

In Northern IL we're supposed to get anywhere from 6 to 12 inches tonight, so we'll see...

If you owned a supermarket and a radio station you could get rich on bread and milk sales just by predicting flurries every day. It's amazing, people hear the word snow and panic as if they're going to be turned into the Donner Party by 2" of the stuff. I've lived in the snowy northeast for most of my life and can remember being snowed in maybe once or twice and never for more than 24 hours. It takes a monumental amount of snow to shut down stores and roads and even in the worst blizzards the roads are passable and the stores are open pretty quickly.

Now, a question for all of you midwest and east coast people....how bad does the weather have to be for school to be canceled?

about 1". and we get that usually once a year, sometime in february. we had some snow in november, which was really odd, but it didnt stick.

almost nobody here can handle driving in that. i live in eastern NC. anything more than an inch in this town and nobody does a damn thing all day.

This. For the 12 years I was in public school I think it was canceled for snow 2 or 3 times. One time it wass -40 something with windchill and school still wasn't canceled. One of the times it was canceled was because we got about 3" of freezing rain after about 2 inches of snow. The busses couldn't get out of the garages because the doors were iced shut.

I remember having so much fun ice skating over the hills and such that were in the park behind my house, or on the streets themselves. You couldn't walk, but we all had ice skates. Going down the huge hills on skates was scary as hell, you could probably hit 50-60 MPH. If you caught your skate on a long piece of grass that was sticking out of the ice, it really hurt when you did the face plant at that speed. But oh god was it fun.
