EDIT: Deal got a bit hotter.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16833156211

Trendnet TEG-S8 10/100/1000Mbps Gigabit Switch 8 x RJ45
$39.99
free shipping
-$25 rebate (exp. 5/28)

= $15

I use one of their other models (8 port GBe but metal instead of plastic housing) and it works fine.

Karaktu reports it does jumbo frames.

msi1337 reported the better deal.

Me too, it's time to replace this old switch with something faster. My old one is a ABS from newegg that was FAR+shipping.

Most of the time you get a router because you need/want the router to do DHCP,Firewall, NAT... where as a switch when you just need to add additional network ports. Most routers also come with a four port switch built in.

Most people with Highspeed internet access get a router so that they can connect multiple pc's behind a router, although it can be done with just a switch it is a lot easier to do with a router. If you need more ports than 4 that typically come with a router, you then buy an additional switch and connect that into one of the router ports. Not sure if that was what you were asking, or if it is helpful at all... but anywho.

(Back on Topic) Certainly a good deal on the switch I think i'll jump!

Very helpful.
I was hoping a switch would be more user friendly with my Embarq DSL than my router.

You might want to go to the Networking Forum and ask for assistance if you are having networking problems with your DSL.

Can't tell from the pics if it has a uplink port. Anyone know? Is an uplink port even needed anymore?

Uplink port not needed just plug it into any other switches regular port to gain an extra 7 ports.

Some cards and switches can now auto detect crossover cables too

Thanks OP. I figured for the price it was a good deal to replace an old switch.

a router is something that takes an IP and uses NAT to give dhcp to all the machines on the network the router is on. most routers have a built in switch now (though some didnt back in the day and you could always build a router).

if you get this gigabit switch, it'd probably be best to connect the uplink on the switch to the router and all your pcs to the switch.

most routers do not have gigabit ports, so if you want to transfer files between pcs the gigabit switch would by used instead of the 10/100 ports on most built in switches on routers.

Go for it! The Newegg newsletter is something that I look forward to almost as much as a GCO $25-off-$75 coupon email.

It either will, or it won't. Mine works. Don't know about jumbo frames (I heard you had to set your cards to the same settings) but I do know that if nothing else is accessing the hard drives, I can easily hit over 20% sustained transfer, so over twice a 100mbit connection.

Nice. I was just thinking about getting one of these for my attic. Thanks, OP!

Edit It looks like it does, indeed, support jumbo frames.
