8 port Switch Question

I have 3 computers in my dorm room and have broadband t1, and an 8 port Asante Switch the part number is FS5008. I want to connect my computers to the switch, and hook my broadband into the switch, thus giving all my computers the connection. This is probably a stupid question with a simple answer, but i figured this would be the best place to ask, any help would be greatly appriciated.

As long as only one computer is online at a time this will work. If you want them to all have access at the same time then you will need a router.

My other problem is i dont know what the ip is for my router, it is not the default, as i didnt buy it new it was given to me from a pull, i asked the person who i got it from and he had no idea, is there anyway of deducing what the ip is?

My plan is to let my linux box do the routing by using 2 nics one to take in the Broadband the other to connect to my switch. i just need the ip of my switch or a way to find out what it is, any help would be greatly appriciated!!

Do u have a switchor a router? Switch wont have an IP inless it is a managed switch ( I bleieve).
If it is in fact a router and not a switch (well router with built in switch instead of just switch). Do a command prompt, type ipconfig /all and look at what your gateway is, thats the IP of your router (assuming u acually have a hardware router)

It is a friendlynet 10/100 Asante FS5008 switch, it can be remote administerd from an internet browser but that requires me to know the ip for the switch (i checked it does allow you to configure it via an HTTP site), with DHCP auto detecting the ip i recieve is 169.254.57.140, the subnetmask is 255.255.0.0, there is no gateway nor does it list the connection speed, this is obviously a bunk ip address my computer is getting, so i need to find away to get the correct ip the switch is set up on now.
I hope with this information you might better understand whats going on, i also have another question, What if i jus got an IP scanner for my network and connect only my laptop(this is the computer i've been using to work with the switch) to the switch, set it up to autodetect my ip, and then scan from 1.1.1.1 to 255.255.255.255, i know this seems a bit brutforcish but if it works im willing to wait several days for it to scan through every ip available... hahah will this work? or is it jus going to take a week or longer and never return any results.

You said you want to use the Linux box as a router. Hook things up this way: broadband into Linux box; all machines into the switch.

I checked on Asante's site and you have a switch. There is no mention that I could see about having to administer it via a web-interface. Now make sure you assign all the computers hooked to the switch an IP address. Make the Linux box 192.168.1.1 (for the eth that is connected to the switch), PC 192.168.1.2, laptop 192.168.1.3) Use a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 for all machines.

So long as you have the Linux box set up to forward IP stuff, all should be good to go.
