Im helping a friend build a PC. So I might not have all the answers to the questions you ask but I'll do my best.

1. What YOUR PC will be used for? Gaming

2. What YOUR budget is? $800

3. What country? USA

4. Brand preference? Nope

5. Using current parts? Keyboard and mouse

6. Overclocking? Nope

7. What resolution will you be using? 1080p

8. WHEN do you plan to build it? within a week

9. Do you need to purchase any software? Window 7

10. Does not need monitor

The must haves for this build:
Must be an i5
Must use newegg
$800 max

Rebates are ok

Here is a build I put together but I know you guys can tweak this

CPU: i5 2400 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115073
CPU Cooler: Stock
Motherboard: ASRock H61M <-- know very little about intel mobos so I just picked one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813157256
Ram: Patriot Gamer 2 Series 8GB ram and video is combo deal
Video: SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 6850 http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.926825
Case and Power combo deal:
Rosewill CHALLENGER
Rosewill HIVE Series HIVE-650 650W http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboD...t=Combo.915250
Hard Drive: Seagate Momentus XT http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148837
OS: Win7 Home 64 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16832116986
DVD Drive: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827151244
Hopefully Im not leaving anything out

$789.90 After combos and discount codes and rebates.

He wants an ssd but I figured we can save by going with the hybrid drive. That way we're not getting an ssd and hdd. Video card I have no clue. Im sure you guys will show me a better one for the money. Video and motherboard I just kinda picked cause I have no idea what to get.

Any questions please ask and I'll do my best to answer. And, thanks to anyone that helps

Personally I think you're better off getting a regular HDD:
1TB Here
Then upgrading in the future, it's really not that big of a deal for most users.

And since you selected a 1066 board you should grab a compatible board with those savings here
Other than that it doesn't look too bad. Possibly step up to a 6870, for $15 extra.

Putting 1600 RAM in a 1333 board ought to work. It should just clock down to 1333, and such speed doesn't matter much on i5s anyway. You might even be able to lower the voltage or the CAS settings. If you want a cheapo board, this is the one I usually aim at.

As for drives, $75 HDD (with savings on DVD burner) + $80 SSD > $155 hybrid drive, except in total disk space.

Thank you for the replies. I edited the first post. I put the wrong video card ram combo. I fixed it. The ram is now Patriot Gamer 2 Series 8GB ddr3 1333.

Hey, just noticed a bundle of the CPU and the HDD I listed. $18 savings! Don't forget to also add the promo code for the CPU - it's not listed on bundle pages, but it should work.

P.S. If dropping the SSD at this point gives you enough money to get a $250 7850, I'd do that.

@ken
Thanks for the hdd/dvd drive combo. Im using that. The cpu/hdd combo doesnt stack with the code

@all

Here is an updated build without an ssd. It comes to $720 after codes, combos and, rebates. That leaves enough room for an ssd or the 7850 depending on what he wants.

CPU: i5 2400 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115073
CPU Cooler: Stock
Motherboard: ASRock H61M/U3S3 http://216.52.208.185/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157236
Ram: Patriot Gamer 2 Series 8GB ram and video is combo deal
Video: SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 6850 http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboD...t=Combo.926825
Case and Power combo deal:
Rosewill CHALLENGER
Rosewill HIVE Series HIVE-650 650W http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboD...t=Combo.915250
OS: Win7 Home 64 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16832116986
hdd/dvd combo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboD...t=Combo.936994
Hopefully Im not leaving anything out

I know the case and PSU come in a nice combo but honestly you don't need a 650W power supply, i5-2400+6850 need only a good ~400W unit, 500W if you want to future proof your rig with two PCIe connectors.

Antec 300 $50 AP ($40 AR) + XFX 450W $40 ($30 AR) ends up being cheaper even before the rebates and both are higher quality. If you want to pay for a more advanced case, how about Fractal Design Core 3000 $70 or Corsair 300R $65 AR?

The rest looks good to me

I too would suggest dropping the SSD in favor of putting it towards somewhere else. I'd rather have it go to a better CPU or GPU but that is just me.

Agree on the case choice. A $700 build is pretty tight as is, no need to spend extra money on worse parts.

appreciate the replies guys. This is no longer an $800 build. Friend went out and got an i7 2600k. And he is looking to get a 7850. Again, thanks for the replies they where helpful but he is on a spending spree now, lol
